Revision as of 15:43, 18 August 2011

Passive skills are skills that add bonuses, usually modifying other skills, that work all the time. They boost overall stats, or modify other skills, but are not used directly.

For instance, an active skill would be one that shot a Fireball. A passive skill would add say, +50% damage to all Fire Skills. Passive skills differ slightly from buffs, which can be very similar bonuses, but with a fixed duration.

In 2010 Blizzard announced that due to recent game changes, there were no longer any passive skills in the Diablo III skill trees. Passive skills remained in the game, but as was revealed at BlizzCon 2010, they were accessed via the traits system. [1] [2]

In July 2011 Blizzard announced that the traits system had been revamped and turned back into a passive skills system.

See the various class skills pages for more details.

Description

Passive skills are not used directly for attacks, and tend to provide bonuses to numerous other skills, or add percentages to damage, to hit, defense, resistances, and other useful stats. Some effects also comes from passive skills, such as activating a bonus under special circumstances, such as a critical hit, or being hit.

Passive skills are often as or more important than some active skills, but usually receive less attention since they are not flashy or obvious in their effects. An example is making the possibility

Passive skills seldom possess synergistic properties. Passive skills are not signature skills.

Synergies

While Animosity doesn't affect any Barbarian skill directly, all Fury Spending skills can be cast more often with this passive in effect.

Development

Passive skills have had a long and storied history. When Diablo III debuted at the WWI 2008, skill trees included passive skills, much like in Diablo II. In 2010, it was announced that passive skills had been renamed traits and separated out from active skills. At the July 2011 Press Event, Blizzard announced that passive skills were once again in the game, replacing the traits system. Animosity was first revealed in the July 2011 Press Event with a listed level of 1 (presumably so players could try it out from the beginning).

Beta

The beta started in September 2011, and Animosity was moved to level 19. When passives were reorganized for Beta Patch 14, Animosity was moved up to level 27.

Black Ice is a rune effect in Ray of Frost, an Offensive Wizard skill.

This rune effect creates ice puddles where monsters die from the attack. These patches of ice deal 193% weapon damage over three seconds to enemies that move through them. The ideal way to use this rune effect is to kill an enemy where others are going to have to stand, thus ensuring that the cold damage radiates to them all for the full three seconds.

Skill Rune Effects

Refer to the Ray of Frost rune effects article for thorough descriptions of all five rune effects in this skill, including screenshots, videos, strategy tips, and other related information.

Development

Prior to the skill revision in February 2012, this rune effect was enabled by the Alabaster Rune, granting the following effect with a level 7 runestone:

[e]

Enemies who die leave a patch of ice on the ground that causes 385% weapon damage per second as Cold to enemies moving through it.

IconBloodthirst.png

Bloodthirst is a Barbarian passive skill unlocked at Level 24, which causes the Barbarian to gain life based on the amount of damage he deals, in a traditional leech-skill.

Reaper of Souls Change

This skill is set for a big change/nerf in Reaper of Souls. Datamined information tells of its future:[3]

Bloodthirst: Each point of Fury spent heals you for 165 Life. Heal amount is increased by 1% of your Health Globe Healing Bonus.

This is part of RoS' across-the-board change to healing, which is almost entirely removing Life Steal from the game, whether it comes from skills or item bonuses.

Current Description

One of the many powerful Barbarian passive skills, Bloodthirst provides a passive Life Steal bonus no other class can match. (Other classes can add Life Steal with specific skills, but never via a full time passive.) This skill makes things much easier for the Barbarian's survival and can open up more gear options, since Barbs can obtain Life Steal from this, or from their Mighty Belts, while all other classes can only get Life Steal from weapons.

Name Level Description

<skill class="Barbarian">Bloodthirst</skill>

Synergies

There are no direct synergies with any active skills or other Barbarian passives. However all skills that boost damage boost the effectiveness of Life Steal, and the Barbarian has a number of those.

Bloodthirst is unique in that it was an original passive skill and is once again a passive skill, but was never a trait. For the July 2011 Press Event, it had a listed level of 1 (presumably so players could try it out from the beginning), but for the beta, it was a level 10 passive.

Beta

The beta started in September 2011, and Bloodthirst was moved to level 10. When passives were reorganized for Beta Patch 14, Bloodthirst was moved up to level 24.

Previous Versions

In Other Games

Players familiar with Diablo II (or WarCraft II or DotA) will recognize that this skill provides lifesteal. However, in Diablo II most skills didn't give life per hit, but there were health leeching prefixes on weapons, which could make any class gain health on hits.

Development

At BlizzCon 2008, there were far more passive than active skills in the three character trees, bit it changed in May 2009 and was shown with more detail at BlizzCon 2009.

Over time the number of passive skills were reduced, and as of Blizzcon 2009 there were about 35 skills for the Wizard, Witch Doctor, and Barbarian, with around a dozen of those passive.

The first big change came in 2010, when the skill trees were completely overhauled, more active skills were introduced, and all of the passive skills were removed. Removed from the skill trees, not from the game, they were turned into the traits system.

The second big change came in July 2011, when passive skills were re-introduced into the game and the traits were removed.
