Drain Power is a passive skill available exclusively to the Wizard. It transfers damage dealt to Arcane Power, essentially giving the Wizard mana leech from spells, in Diablo II terms.

Lore

Wizards are nothing if not inventive in satisfying their hunger for power.

Design

All basic attacks provide 10 Arcane Power.

Arcane Power fuels many of the Wizard's skills.

Classes

The Wizard acquires this skill at level 10.

Synergies

Spells that dealt damage over time would seem very useful with this. Could a Wizard standing in her own field of damage from Blizzard or Arcane Torrent or Meteor or some other AoE, DfA spell heal back more quickly than the damage she took, and serve as her own honey pot to attract and focus the enemy?

Development

Passive skills have had a long and storied history. When Diablo III debuted at the WWI 2008, skill trees included passive skills, much like in Diablo II. In 2010, it was announced that passive skills had been renamed traits and separated out from active skills. At the July 2011 Press Event, Blizzard announced that passive skills were once again in the game, replacing the traits system. Like many passive skills, Drain Power was moved directly from a trait of the same name when traits were changed back to passive skills in early 2011. The skill was nerfed a bit, however.

See the traits page for more details on previous versions of this and many other passive skills.
