Active skills are in opposition to passive skills. Active skills must be cast or used directly with the mouse button or one of the hotkeys. These are skills you use while fighting monsters, often in place of the basic attack function.

Since Blizzcon 2010, only Active skills are shown in the skill menu. Passive skills are all now designed as traits.

There are no outright skill synergies in Diablo III, but many skills improve the function of other skills, and most traits have direct boosting effects on skills.

Only active skills are considered signature skills for classes.
