Since Blizzcon 2010, only Active skills are shown in the skill menu. Passive skills are all now designed as traits.

There are no outright skill synergies in Diablo III, but many skills improve the function of other skills, and most traits have direct boosting effects on skills.

Only active skills are considered signature skills for classes.

Prior to Blizzcon 2010, when passive skills were still displayed in the main skill trees, only active skills had sockets for runestones.
