Inner Sanctuary is a Spirit Spending Monk skill unlocked at Level 11. The Monk casts a rune on the ground that cannot be passed.

Background

Inner Sanctuary in action

The Monk uses holy energy to create a protected region on the ground for a few seconds that can not be bypassed by enemies.

Skill Design

Inner Sanctuary seen in the Diablo 3 Beta.

When cast, this skill creates a large rune on the ground where the Monk is standing, with a small, Slow Time-like bubble shield surrounding the character. It seems to be impermeable to the movement of melee attackers, however it does not protect against long-ranged melee attacks. (A Fallen Overseer has enough range to hit the character standing in the middle, while regular Fallen cannot.)

It is unknown as to how this skill functions with ranged projectiles, flying enemies, or boss fights.

Synergies

Development

Inner Sanctuary was first shown at BlizzCon 2009 as one of the originals when the Monk was unveiled. It wasn't needed in that demo, since the Monk was hugely powerful, but there may be more utility for it in the final game.

Skill tiers were removed for the July 2011 Press Event, and Inner Sanctuary became a level 11 skill.
