Roland’s Legacy is an item set with a required character level of 70 and are only available in the expansion pack, Reaper of Souls. The set is comprised of six pieces of armor, Roland's Visage, Roland's Mantle, Roland's Bearing, Roland's Grasp, Roland's Determination, and Roland's Stride. These items can only be equipped by the Crusader.

This item set was added in Patch 2.1 after testing on the PTR (see section below) and was designed to give the Crusader a set that boosted his melee attacking ability, since the existing Crusader builds, especially via the Armor of Akkhan set, were all focused on the class' spell casting abilities.

These items drop as loot, and are not crafted via the Blacksmith or Jeweler, though they can be improved via enchanting with the Mystic.

Required Level: 70

Development

This item set was introduced in Patch 2.1 and tested pre-patch on the PTR. Blizzard included it in a patch during the testing period in mid-August 2014 and asked fans for "focused feedback" once it was enabled.[1]

We recently unleashed a new Crusader set into the wilds of the PTR. With this set, our goal has been to encourage a melee playstyle and to promote new builds and synergies apart from the established builds (looking at you, Blessed Shield and Darklight).

As we move forward with the PTR, please feel free to share any and all general feedback you may have about this new set in this thread. However, info which specifically relates to the topics below may offer the most productive commentary for us to share with our development team.

Related topics on which we’re seeking feedback (again, in this thread) include:

  • What synergies prove most useful?
  • How do you see this set competing with existing sets?
  • How has your playstyle been affected by the set, and/or the individual items in the set?
  • What changes might you suggest?

Thanks again everyone! Your feedback is most appreciated and continues to be instrumental in helping us to bring 2.1.0 into the mortal world. As ever, your deeds of valor will be remembered.

New Crusader Armor Set (Name still TBD)

  • (2) Set Bonus
    • +500 Strength
  • (4) Set Bonus
    • +100% Shield Bash Damage
    • +100% Sweep Attack Damage
  • (6) Set Bonus
    • Hitting an enemy with Shield Bash or Sweep Attack grants 20% Attack Speed for 3 seconds, stacking up to 5 times

The goal was to enable Crusader melee combat play, since at that time all of the powerful and popular Crusader builds were focused on spell casting abilities and play styles. The original Battle.net thread with feedback can be seen here. Blizzard added a more specific feedback request a few days later.

Thanks everyone for continuing to post and share your feedback! At present, we'd love to hear from testers in the PTR who are using this set at Greater Rift levels 30+. If you fit that particular bill, drop us a line in this thread.

Early Testing

A fan testing the early version of this set on the PTR and dominating Torment 6. His conclusions:

  • Pros: Huge killing speed with great burst damage.
  • Cons: Lack of defensive bonuses makes the Crusader feel squishy.
