Indigo Runes, (previously called Multi-strike Rune, then Hydra Rune) are one of the five types of skill runes found in Diablo 3. Of the five, revealed in May 2010, only Indigo is named/known. The other four types are known by earlier development names, but not the new/final color-themed titles.

All runes occur at 5 or 6 quality levels, much as gems did in Diablo 2. Higher levels are harder to find and more powerful. It's not known if there will be any way to craft higher level runes, as could be done with gems and item runes in Diablo 2.

  • See the skill runes page for details about the other types of runes and much more on this item type.

The Indigo Rune

There are five types of skill runes in Diablo 3. Each type modifies skills in one way, with some variety between different skills. The dev-name for the Indigo Rune was the multistrike rune, a title that aptly describes its function. This rune adds multiple hits to the skill it's socketed in, allowing attacks to land multiple hits. A few examples are displayed below.

Little is known of the function of this rune in technical terms. How many extra hits will be added, how much damage they'll do, how quickly or slowly they will be executed, etc.

It's not known what an Indigo rune will do when socketed into a skill that does not deal damage/attacks, such as skills that provide defensive bonuses, or movement. (Such as the Wizard's Teleport skill.)

Indigo Rune Skill Effects

Blizzard has given a few examples of what sort of bonuses skills would receive from an Indigo rune, and some screenshots taken from a BlizzCon 2008 panel are displayed below.

All of these functions are subject to modification or change during the continuing development process.

Witch Doctor: Skull of Flame

A Indigo adds extra bounces to the Witch Doctor's thrown Skull of Flame spell. This one was shown at a presentation at BlizzCon 2008, and the rune caused each thrown Skull of Flame to bounce several times, dealing additional explosive fire damage each time. Nothing is known about how many bounces this rune would add with each quality level, if each hit deals the full or somewhat reduced damage, if there are additional mana costs, etc. All those issues will be resolved with further play testing.

Wizard: Mirror Image

When a hydra rune is socketed in the Wizard's Mirror Image skill, the number of duplicates created is increased. (October 2008.)

Wizard: Teleport

A hydra rune added to the Teleport skill causes a temporary duplicate of the Wizard to be created when the Wizard teleports. The duplicate draws enemy attention for as long as it persists.

Teleporting with Indigo creates duplicates of the Wizard.

Wizard: Electrocute

This skill is boosted considerably with a hydra rune, turning it into a sort of chain lightning, with the sizzling bolt hopping to lock onto and cook additional targets. (October 2008. --Was still named Multistrike rune)
