Entering the Realm of Trials.

The Realm of Trials (AKA Trials or RoT or Greater Rift Trial or Grift Trial) is a mini-game feature that players can use to earn higher level Greater Rift Keystones, enabling them to start off in higher level Greater Rifts. Players can not leave the Wave of Trials arena it except by returning to town, which can only be done after a wave is failed. There is also no way to respec skills or change around equipment while in a Trial.

The Realm of Trials area is a small, dark, shadowy, circular, arena-style map with a couple of health pools around the outside. Once there, players undergo a Trial as waves of monsters appear. Each wave spawns about 40 enemies and starts a 20 second timer. If players kill all the monsters in the wave before the timer expires, another wave spawns with slightly harder (more hit points and higher damage) enemies. (Changes during the PTR caused waves to jump more than 1 rank if players cleared them very quickly.) This process continues until players are unable to finish a wave within the time limit.

When the last monster is killed outside the time limit the Trial is over and no more waves will spawn. Players can then return to town and speak to Orek, who will reward them with a Greater Rift Keystone that corresponds to the highest level wave they were able to complete in the Trial. The difficulty of the waves roughly corresponds to the difficulty level of the Greater Rift, but the GRK reward is scaled down in about a 3:2 ratio. E.g. a player who completed 30 waves would receive around a level 20 GRK. This is so players don't enter a Greater Rift level that's too hard for them to complete right from the start.[1]

Realm of Trials feature was added in Patch 2.1, after extensive testing on the PTR.
