Emerald
Emeralds are one of the four types of gems found in Diablo III.
Over the first year of Diablo 3, Emeralds held the most value (in Softcore) due to the huge damage boost they add to weapons. This is only true during the end game, when characters have a high value in Critical hit Chance. At lower levels Rubies are much better weapon sockets, and they become end game viable when Patch 1.0.7 greatly buffed their damage.
Emeralds are also coveted by Demon Hunters and Monks for the +Dexterity boost when socketed in armor.
Emeralds are little-used in helms since Gold Find is not a much-sought after stat. It's been suggested that the helm bonus should be doubled or tripled, to make it more desirable to players.
Emerald Changes
During the Beta test, Emeralds boosted Magic Find in helms. This bonus was switched back to Topaz (as it was in Diablo 2) before Diablo 3's release and Emeralds became the helm Gold Find gem.
