Recipes list the ingredients required to engage the various artisans in crafting in Diablo III.

Recipes are a way to make potentially very good items, using raw materials obtained by salvaging items in the Salvage Cube. Unwanted items must be broken down in this fashion, and the materials used for crafting. Whether a player will gain more from salvaging items, or selling them for gold, depends on the item and the needs of your character.

Crafting Items

Big list of Blacksmith recipes.

To craft items, click on one of the three Artisans and select the crafting interface. A long list of recipes will appear. Select the one you want to make, and the recipe will appear. The materials required are listed below, while the item to be made appears off to the right.

Empowered Long Axe recipe.

This recipe would make an Empowered Long Axe; a decent weapon for a low level Barbarian. Crafting items requires the right materials; in this case 6 common scraps, 1 bone, and 200 gold. Materials are obtained from materials, the raw ingredients obtained by salvaging items in the salvage cube.

All crafting recipes are semi-random in Diablo III; the base item is known, but there are always some random properties, as shown on this axe. Higher quality recipes have some preset modifiers, plus several random ones.

The end game mixture of items is intended to include some rares, some legendary items (uniques) and some crafted items, so the best crafting recipes will have the potential to create truly uber items. It will take many, many tries to get one, of course, with the numerous random properties turning this into a form of semi-directed gambling.

Finding Recipes

A recipe for a Magical Dagger.

Many recipes are inherently known to the Artisans. They know some to start with, and add more each time they level up. Each artisan must be trained multiple times per level, increasing in amount and cost per level. In addition, the player must also provide the artisan with a Tome of Training (or another similarly functional item later in the game, and in higher difficulties) in order to train the artisan further. Using the tome during the training process also teaches the artisan new recipes.

Other recipes though, the ones that can make the best items in the game, must be learned from special scrolls which are found from monster drops. These scrolls, when given to the appropriate Artisan, will teach them how to make that new recipe.

There may be other ways to obtain recipes, such as quest rewards, but any more information on that is currently unknown.

Known Recipes

Empowered Long Axe sample.

The only known recipes are some Blacksmith Recipes shown in the Caravan video, from August 2010, and some lower-level recipes from the beta. Most of these are known only by their names, but the ingredients required for a few of them are known, and even the end product for one. Click the linked items for more details.
