Flawless Square Gems (AKA FS or FSGs) are the 8th rank of gem, and the highest that can be found from monster or chest drops in Diablo 3. (Marquise gems are dropped in Reaper of Souls).
During most of Diablo 3 Vanilla this was the only type of gem that dropped on the Inferno difficulty. (Prior to Patch 1.0.4, Square gems also dropped in Inferno). During much of D3v, Flawless Squares were the default gem rank and currency, and were the base level players spoke of when describing crafting costs.
In D3v2 Flawless Squares are still the highest level gem that can drop, but with the old difficulty tiers removed this gem begins to drop around level 55, and is the only gem seen above that level.
Crafting
With the closure of the Auction House and the advent of D3v2, this gem is the highest that can be found, and all higher gems must be created by upgrading flawless squares via crafting. See the main gems article for all crafting gold and material costs.
It is quite inexpensive to upgrade Square gems to Flawless Squares:
- * 2 Square gems (same type) + 100 gold = 1 Flawless Square gem
