Chipped Gems (AKA chippies) are the 1st rank of gem, with the lowest bonus to items. These are the first gems seen by a new player, and they begin to drop from targets of round level 15. Chippies drop until targets reach about level 21, when Flawed Gems begin to drop.
Two chipped gems of the same type plus 10 gold will upgrade to a Flawed gem, slightly increasing the bonuses earned by socketing the gem. Due to their low level and minimal bonuses, Chipped gems are of very little use in Diablo 3 or Reaper of Souls, and only a player brand new to the game with no higher level gems available will bother to socket or collect these.
Chipped gems had utility in crafting in Diablo 2, and many players used high level characters to farm them on low difficulty levels. This is not the case in Diablo 3 or RoS, and chippies have no function beyond their very minimal utility as a socketed gem.
Crafting[edit | edit source]
Chipped gems have no use in crafting recipes, and as the lowest quality gem, nothing can be upgraded into them. The Jeweler can upgrade this gem.
- 2 Chipped gems (same type) + 10 gold = 1 Flawed gem (same type)
