Materials have no function on their own, but they are required for many crafting and item modification activities, including enchanting, crafting weapons, armor, and jewelry, and training Artisans.
Materials can be found directly from monster or chest drops, and they are obtained by salvaging items with the Blacksmith.
- All materials (and gems) stack up to 5000.

Materials in Loot 2.0
Diablo 3 version 2 reworked and simplified the Diablo 3 vanilla materials system, with one common, one magic, two rare and one legendary item.
In Reaper of Souls, a new tier of materials was added and in Patch 2.3, the lower tier was removed. The same patch added materials found only in Horadric Caches. Prior to Patch 2.0.6, legendary materials dropped from certain monsters and were used to craft items.
Salvaging Materials
Each item of a given quality level salvages into the same level of material as follows:
- Common (white): Reusable Parts
- Magic (blue): Arcane Dust
- Rare (yellow): Veiled Crystal
- Legendary (orange) & Set (green): Forgotten Soul
Other Materials
Patch 2.3 introduced materials found in the Horadric Caches, rewarded after completing all the bounties in each act. There is a different material for each act and used for Kanai's Cube recipe. Please see the respective pages for more details.
Death's Breath is a rare material that only drops from golden chests, elite mobs and treasure goblins. These are used for crafting high-level gear and in Kanai's Cube recipes.
Converting Materials
It is possible to convert between Reusable Parts, Arcane Dust and Veiled Crystals, using the Anger of Iben Fahd recipe. It requires 100 of one material, one piece of the material desired and 1 Death's Breath.
ARCHIVE: Diablo 3 vanilla Materials
Archived info from the system in the game during Diablo 3 vanilla. The initial materials system ran from from launch in May 2012 until [[Diablo 3 version 2] went live in February 2014, with several minor additions and modifications during that time. The info below is no longer current and many of the materials no longer exist; all the obsolete types of material were transformed into the new materials when D3v2 went live.
There are nine materials in total. Each difficulty level has its own magic material and its own rare material. Inferno alone has a legendary material. An item always yields materials of the difficulty level its item level corresponds to: item levels 1–30 are Normal, 31–50 are Nightmare, 51–59 are Hell, and 60–63 are Inferno.
- Magic items have a 100% chance to yield a magic material and a 15% chance to also yield a rare material.
- Rare items have a 100% chance to yield both a magic material and a rare material.
- Legendary and set items have a 100% chance to yield three rare materials. On Inferno, one of these Iridescent Tears is swapped for a Fiery Brimstone.
Materials cannot be converted or upgraded.
