Unbound Bolt.

The Unbound Bolt is a crafted legendary bow that can only be created in Reaper of Souls. After patch 2.0.6 this item no longer requires a Shimmering Quill or any other legendary materials to craft.

To create this item, find the Plan: Unbound Bolt, which can be randomly dropped randomly by any level 70 target, and teach the plan to the Blacksmith. Once learned by the smith, any character on your account can make as many of these as you can afford to create, though like all bows, it's best suited to a Demon Hunter.

Unbound Bolt stats[edit | edit source]

This bow has no legendary affix but has an inherent bonus to Critical hit Damage, which is a very powerful and very rare modifier on weapons in Reaper of Souls. A good roll on the damage, plus that Critical hit Damage can make this the biggest raw damage output ranged weapon in the game, for a Demon Hunter.

The problem is that with 3 inherent primary affixes, that leaves only 1 random slot for +Dexterity and a socket, both of which are much more valuable than the inherent bonus to Attack Speed. Thus a player who creates this bow and wants it to work as well as possible must hope to get Dexterity or socket in the random affix, then enchant the Attack Speed to get the other.

Unbound Bolt: Legendary Bow

  • Item Level: 70

Primary Affixes:

  • +(981-1199)-(1175-1490) Fire Damage
  • +5-7% Attack Speed
  • +31-35% Critical hit Damage
  • +1 random primary affixes

Secondary Affixes:

  • +2 random primary affixes
  • Legendary Affix: None.

Many a hero has wielded this bow through many an age,
and the tales sung of it can be heard from one end of the
world to the other.

Crafting[edit | edit source]

Once a player finds the randomly-dropped plan and teaches it to the Blacksmith, the item can be created by any character on that account. This item always has a lvl 70 requirement, no matter what level character crafts it. The Smart Loot system means that this item will usually roll with a mainstat and/or +skill damage bonus appropriate to the class of the character that creates it.

Crafting Costs:

Patch 2.0.6 controversially[1] removed Legendary Materials, which changed the crafting costs for every level 70 RoS recipe. Prior to that patch Archfiend Arrows required 1 Shimmering Quill and 1 Death's Breath.

Legendary Material[edit | edit source]

Legendary Materials were controversially[2] removed in Patch 2.0.6. The following is archived for posterity.

Shimmering-quill.jpg

The required legendary material, Shimmering Quill can only be found from a Unique (purple) Quill Fiend. These are rare sights, never fingered as [bounties]] and thus the only practical way to farm this material is to check the cellars along the road to Old Tristram.

Take the waypoint to Old Tristram, then move along the road as quickly as possible, checking all three cellars (at least one will be a dungeon entrance in each game, and usually two) and hoping to find Sarkoth or Gorathra along the way. One or the other is present about every fifth game.
