The Sources of DiabloWiki are many and varied. Mostly we get information from the official Diablo lore and info from the Diablo II Manual, the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Manual, the Writings of Abd al-Hazir and the Novels.

As with all wikis, it's important that you as a contributor does not use copyrighted material on this page, as we would have to delete it if we find that. Having said that, it is ok to look for information on the web that likeminded Diabloites gathered, and writing similar material based on that, or quote some information, such as from interviews with developers. Being a wiki, you are generally required to link a reference to the information you gathered.

Are you looking for information on Sources of information used in DiabloWiki.Net?'

Books are one type of orb.

Sources (formerly Orbs) are Wizard-specific items found in Diablo III. Sources are equipped in the off hand, like shields, but they do not have defensive bonuses and can not be used to block with. They come in a variety of graphics (usually crystal balls, but also books, as seen in the beta), and are simply items with bonus stats, usually to offense or general bonuses. Using a Source is essentially a way for a Wizard to dual-wield Caster Weapons, at the cost of whatever defensive bonuses she might have obtained from using a shield.

As blocking is much less useful a defensive property in Diablo III than it was in Diablo II, using a Source in the off hand, purely for the offensive bonuses, is not such a damaging trade off, since the shield wouldn't have done all that much good anyway. Sources are akin to the Necromancer's totems, and add similar bonus properties.
