Legendary Materials

Revision as of 15:09, 22 April 2014 by Chapapote (talk | contribs) (Legendary Materials: Droppable)

Legendary and other materials in Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls. This page s under construction and will soon be streamlined and reformatted.

White Materials

Salvage from gray and white items. 2-6 per salvage.

Blue Materials

Salvage from blue items. 1-4 materials per item salvaged.

Yellow Materials

Salvage from Rare items. 1 per item salvaged.

Find only. Dropped by Treasure Goblins, random elites, Purple uniques, and resplendent chests.

Removed Materials

Diablo 3 vanilla had blue, and yellow materials for each of the four difficulty levels, Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno. D3v2 simplified this system with the Normal blue and yellow materials remaining and covering level 1-60, and new blue and yellow materials added from 61-70. The old blue and yellow materials from Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno were all converted into the level 1-60 version of themselves, thus none of the following exist in the game any longer.

Blue obsolete materials.

Yellow obsolete materials.

Legendary Materials: Salvageable

There are two types of legendary material that are salvaged from legendary and set items, including crafted legendary/set items. One material comes from each salvaged item. They may also directly drop from Rift Guardians.

Each is used in all legendary crafting and enchanting recipes of their appropriate level range. Forgotten Souls are the chief bottleneck for all end game crafting and legendary enchanting, and most players feel it is impossible to have too many, since at any moment a ring or amulet might require a dozen or more enchants to get the perfect affix.

Legendary Material Drop Rates

Legendary materials drop more often on higher difficulty levels. Their drop rate was tripled in Patch 1.0.4, making them all much easier to find. Here are the V2.04 drop rates for legendary materials (and Death's Breaths.

  • Normal: 15%
  • Hard: 18%
  • Expert: 21%
  • Master: 25%
  • Torment 1: 31%
  • Torment 2: 37%
  • Torment 3: 44%
  • Torment 4: 53%
  • Torment 5: 64%
  • Torment 6: 77%

Legendary Materials: Droppable

The following must all be found in the world. Only two, Adventure's Journal and Griswold's Scribblings, are found throughout the game, before level 70, and from objects of all types. All the rest drop only from Uniques (Purples) of the correct type, wherever they may be found, and only at level 70.

Some Purples are bosses tied to quests and thus they appear every game in Adventure Mode, making them much easier to farm for their material. Examples include the Skeleton King, Maghda, Ghom, Cydaea, Rakanoth, Izual, Adria, etc. Many of those Uniques are the only source for one legendary material.

Other random-spawning purples are much harder to find. The other types do not appear every game, seldom have a fixed location, and can require a lot of searching to find them even if they can only appear on one level. The best way to find these types of Purples is to find a game where they are a Bounty. There is no guarantee they will drop the legendary material even then, but at least you know where they are in that game.

Item Used For Drops From Notes
Adventurers-journal.jpg
Adventurer's Journal
Pender's Purchase crafted legendary gloves. Breakable and clickable objects (except chests). Seen from loose floor tiles, urns and vases, barrels, dead bodies, etc. This is the most common legendary material, due to the huge variety of objects it may spawn from. The gloves are not very good, with no legendary property and just six random modifiers.
Angelic-shard.jpg
Angelic Shard
Hallowed Protectors crafted item Set Fallen Angels, found entirely in Acts Four and Five. Confirmed: Hallowed Protectors is a popular set to create, with a variety of one-handed weapons and a shield. This is one of the more-common materials, with numerous Fallen Angels capable of dropping it. Izual is the most commonly farmed, simply because he appears every game.
Behistun-rune.jpg
Behistun Rune
Mark of the Magi, crafted legendary staff Unique Cultist Summoners and their Unique Hellions (Demon Dogs). Another fairly common material, due to the sheer number of possible drop sources. This one can be farmed along with Maghda's Tortured Soul, since one of the Purples capable of dropping a Behistun Rune will appear perhaps 2/3 of the time in or on the way to Alcarnus.
Bloody-pincer.jpg
Bloody Pincer
Demon Claw, legendary Fist Weapon (Monk only). Tormented Stingers and Scarabs.
Borns-key.jpg
Born's Key
Born's Command Item Set Zombies and Brigands (grave robbers).
Captured-nightmare.jpg
Captured Nightmare
Night's Reaping, Legendary one-handed Mighty Weapon. (Barbarian only.) Terror Demons and Enslaved Nightmares. One of the tougher materials to obtain, since Purples of this type spawn very infrequently and are not often seen as Bounties. The weapon is not that great anyway, with no legendary affix, though it has high Life% inherent bonus.
Captured-soul.jpg
Captured Soul
Lai Yui's Persuader, legendary Daibo (Monk only) Soul Rippers. (Tongue Lashers.) A tough one to find with few options for the drop. As Daibos unuseful as Diabos are, it's not clear that anyone has ever actually made this item.
Cartographers-toolkit.jpg
Cartographer's Toolkit
Board Walkers, legendary boots. Ghouls. (The fast moving melee type.) The Board Walkers boots have inherent faster run, but no special legendary properties.
Cultist-blood.jpg
Cultist Blood
Blood-Magic Edge, legendary Dagger Cultists. (Melee attacker type.)
Defiled-doll.jpg
Defiled Doll
Spite, legendary Mojo (Witch Doctor only.) Succubi.
Demon-skin.jpg
Demon Skin
[Demon's Hide]] Item Set Phasebeasts and Armored Destroyers.
Element-of-celerity.jpg
Element of Celerity
Fleeting Strap, legendary Belt. Scavengers.
Essence-of-twin-seas.jpg
Essence of the Twin Seas
Captain Crimson's Trimmings Item Set Dune Threshers.
Eternal-power-capsule.jpg
Eternal Power Capsule
Arcane Barb, legendary two-handed Crossbow. Cuddle Bears. An especially hard material to find, as it requires a trip to Whimsyshire and Purple Cuddle Bears do not spawn there every game. This is necessarily farmed along with Mystical Source, which drops from Unique Ponies in Whimsyshire.
Eyes-of-the-dead.jpg
Eyes of the Dead
War of the Dead, Two-handed Mighty Weapon. (Barbarian only.) Skeletons. (Melee type.)
Frozen-blood.jpg
Frozen Blood
Utar's Roar, one-handed Axe This material was almost unfindable during the first weeks of Reaper of Souls, due to a bug causing Chiltara to spawn very, very rarely.
Glowing-ore.jpg
Glowing Ore
Cosmic Strand, legendary Source. (Wizard only.) Primordial Scavengers. (The huge rock-skinned burrowing creatures.)
Griswolds-scribblings.jpg
Griswold's Scribblings
Griswold's Perfection, one-handed Sword. Potentially every bookshelf, lore bag, Cain's backpack, satchels, podiums, Angiris Archives, etc, throughout the entire game. Anything clickable that might hold a lore book can drop this item once a character has previously found the lore book. The second most common legendary material, these can be found by any level character from hundreds of possible spots throughout the game. Though the sword has no special legendary property, it can roll with high damage and the common nature of the crafting material results in many players trying their luck on this one.
Hilt-of-the-silver-wolf.jpg
Hilt of the Silver Wolf
Golden Scourge, one-handed Flail. (Crusader only.) Fallen Hounds. Though fallen hounds are quite common monsters, they are usually seen in trash mob form with other Fallen. Finding a purple one is much less frequent.
Human-cartilage.jpg
Human Cartilage
Wall of Man, legendary Shield Unburied. The shield has a bonus +10-20% chance to block and can be quite a powerful defensive bonus, for the rare character who uses a shield.
Iron-wolves-doctrine.jpg
Iron Wolves Doctrine
Asheara's Vestments Item Set Deceiver Magi. (The nova-field casting snake men.)
Living-flame.jpg
Living Flame
Cinder Switch, Two-handed Axe. Morlu Casters. (The Meteor-dropping guys.) (Random spawn or possible Bounty target.)
Lyekurns-diary.jpg
Lyekurn's Diary
Corruption, legendary Shoulders
  • Azmodan. (Fixed spawn, Act Boss of Act Three.)
Maghdas-tormented-soul.jpg
Maghda's Tormented Soul
Cain's Destiny Item Set.
  • Maghda. Fixed spawn, end dungeon from Alcarnus, Act 2.
Cain's Destiny is one of the more popular item sets to craft with very nice 2 and 3 item bonuses, and Maghda is one of the easiest bosses to run for materials, so this is a popular combination.
Mystical-source.jpg
Mystical Source
Sage's Journey Item Set Ponies. This is necessarily farmed along with Eternal Power Capsule, which drops from Unique Cuddle Bears in Whimsyshire.
Phial-of-weakness.jpg
Phial of Weakness
Atrophy, legendary Wand. (Wizard only.) Heralds of Pestilence. Arm underground tickle poison attackers.
Quaking-vial.jpg
Quaking Vial
Sunder, Two-handed Mace. Mallet Lords. (Hammer time!)
Reapers-fear.jpg
Reaper's Fear
Reaper's Wraps, legendary Bracers
  • Malthael. Fixed spawn, Act Boss for Act 5.
This Plan drops as a guaranteed on the first Malthael kill on each account. The material is random, and was extremely rare during the first two weeks of Reaper of Souls. The bug in drop rate was fixed in Patch 2.0.4.
Rydraelm-tome.jpg
Rydraelm Tome
[Mantle of the Rydraelm]], legendary Chest Armor Fallen Shamans.
Shard-of-entsteig-plate.jpg
Shard of Entsteig Plate
Aughild's Authority Item Set Enraged Phantoms. (Flying Wraith ghosts.)
Shattered-core.jpg
Shattered Core
Devastator, one-handed legendary Mace Sand Dwellers. (Huge Sand Golem enemies who wait hidden beneath the surface.)
Shimmering-quill.jpg
Shimmering Quill
Unbound Bolt, Bow. Quill Fiends. Sarkoth and Gorathra are easy to search for, since there are three possible cellars along the Old Tristram Road, and all can be searched in just a moment or two. Most every game spawns two of the cellars, with one of the Quill Rat uniques appearing perhaps every 4th or 5th cellar.
Shuddering-demon-bone.jpg
Shuddering Demon Bone
Archfiend Arrows, legendary Quiver. (Demon Hunter only.) Morlu. (Melee type, wielder of Diabos.) Though these type of monsters are quite rare, one or the other spawns as a bounty at least every other game in Act Four, making them relatively easy to farm.
Skelons-dice.jpg
Skelon's Dice
Skelon's Deceit, legendary Pants. Oppressors and Warscarred Ravagers. (Huge winged melee fighting demons.) For a time during the beta test, Malthael dropped this material, due to a bug.
Skull-of-raylend.jpg
Skull of Raylend
Helm of Rule, legendary Helm Colossal Golgors.
Sydyru-bone.jpg
Sydyru Bone
Sydryu Crust, legendary Bow Bats.
Symbol-of-the-guardian-brotherhood.jpg
Symbol of the Guardian Brotherhood
Guardian's Jeopardy Item Set Demon Troopers. (The large, mace-wielding, melee brawlers seen all over the upper Bastion's Keep levels.) One of the most commonly-found legendary materials since there are so many common Uniques that can drop it. Dragus deserves special mention, as he is an almost free kill, spawning in the same place very near the Stonefort waypoint in perhaps 3/4 of the time in Adventure Mode.
Torn-soul.jpg
Torn Soul
Living Umbral Oath, legendary Ceremonial Knife. (Witch Doctor only.) Khazra Shamans. (Goatmen mages.)
Urn-of-quickening.jpg
Urn of Quickening
