He can’t do them very often. But they’re great attacks, escapes, and some are recovery moves. That one worked out really well.

From this, it sounds as if the Monk will always be able to do combo moves, but will need to do them successfully in order to enable his more powerful, single use skills.

This seems a very generous design; there were only 3 combo skills (and 8 total [[Monk skills]]) revealed in the Blizzcon 2009 demo, but all 3 combos were very destructive, and a player could play the Monk quite effectively using only those skills.

Nothing is known about how Spirit is shown in the game. It will probably just be a filling bulb, like health or [[mana]], but the color isn't known. Spirit was removed from the build shown in the [[Caravan]] movie from Gamescom 2010, so as not to give away the [[WiP]] surprise.

Spirit is the Monk's resource in Diablo III. It is generated by using combo skills and spent by using other skills.

The resource was fully functional in the game as of Blizzcon 2010, and Spirit is often cited by the developers as their favorite of the various resources and the one they think is working the best.

Spirit

Jay Wilson revealed Spirit in an interview from Gamescom, in August 2010. [1]

Jay Wilson: The Monk has Spirit. That’s the resource we’re happiest with. He came together very quickly. His combo moves generate spirit, and that’s used for signature moves he does. He can’t do them very often. But they’re great attacks, escapes, and some are recovery moves. That one worked out really well.

Spirit Skills and Traits

Spirit is built up by using combo skills, at a flat, set rate. For instance, each of the three hits that makes up Hands of Lightning added 3 Spirit to the pool, for a Clvl 9 Monk in the Blizzcon demo. The gain per combo use may be modified by other skills, traits, and item bonuses.

Here's a listing of all known Monk skills combos, all of which are subject to change as development continues.

  • Hands of Lightning --Combo that deals 3 punches with substantial bonus lightning damage.
  • Long Reach -- Combo that strikes multiple enemies with greater than melee range.
  • Crippling Wave -- Combo that slows and dazes enemies.
  • Dashing Strike -- Combo that allows the Monk to move very quickly across long distances to the enemy. (Under construction.)
  • Way of the Hundred Fists -- Combo that deals many powerful hits to all enemies in the vicinity.
  • Exploding Palm -- Combo that time bombs enemies, triggering them to explode and damage all nearby enemies upon their death.
  • Sweeping Wind -- Combo that hits all nearby enemies multiple times.

Only one of the Monk Traits seen at Blizzcon 2010 listed any effect on Spirit, but the Monk's traits were still clearly a work in progress, so there may be more such options in the final game.
