Traits are passive skills, in Diablo III. They have their own "skill tree" of sorts, and are not mixed in with the regular active skills in their "skill tree."
Though many traits are unique to each class, others are shared between 2, 3 or all 5 classes. Click to the class traits articles for full listings, or read any individual trait page for more details about that trait.
