Risen Dead (aka zombies) are undead reanimated human corpses that hunger for the blood and flesh of the living.

One of the standard monster types in the Diablo games (and all fantasy RPGs), Zombies are one of the easier types of monsters to slay, notable for their slow foot speed and lack of armor or weaponry. There are higher level types of zombies, and many much more fearsome members of the Undead, but every adventurer must start off with some shambling bags of experience, and zombies admirably fill that role.

Zombies return to Diablo III in much the same form as they limped around in Diablo I and Diablo II: humanoid, slow, shambling, and just generally unpleasant. Their slow speed and negligible intelligence makes them ideal targets for new characters who are just starting to practice their skills.

Close up view.

They are easy to outrun and outsmart, and only ever pose a threat if they appear in such large numbers that you can't kill them all in time. Even that, however, is normally not a problem, since all classes have some sort of AoE damage spell to kill more of them at once.

Spells and Abilities

Regular Zombies do not boast special abilities, though there are various subtypes that have some unusual talents, such as breaking in half and fighting on, with just a Crawling Torso.

Known Zombie Types

While there are individual monsters actually called "Zombie," the term is frequently used to refer to all of the fleshy, undead, human-sized creatures in Diablo III. These include:

It's not yet known if these are different monster types, or just subtypes of the basic Zombie.

Related Monsters

  • Ghoul - Seems to be a reanimated corpse (ie: a Zombie), but has none of the classical characteristics of the classical walking corpse. they are fast and nimble. We're not sure if this monster is related or not yet.

Background

Zombies can be both re-animated corpses straight out of a grave, which require very little magic energy from a Necromancer to give a basic motivation (braaaains...) of destructive power. It's motivation can also be a restless spirit of the former inhabitant of the body, awakening again after death, looking for others to inflict this pain.

Zombies are generally completely void of intelligence, and the wounds they received prior to their death often slows them down, making them dangerous primarily only in large numbers. They are the most basic sort of undead, often thought of as even less troublesome than Skeletons. The one thing they have as an advantage is usually that they can take more physical punishment before they are destroyed, and the force or spirit that drives them is removed/expelled.

Lore

I will never forget the first time I saw these horrors shambling out of the misty woods. Our loved ones, buried long ago, rose from their graves and began to attack the living. However, the risen dead were only the beginning...

Deckard Cain

Development

In previous games, Zombies have been pretty straight-forward.
