The Fallen Star Walkthrough
The Fallen Star is, unsurprisingly, a basic tutorial-style introduction into the game where the player is acclimated to the controls, and also to the questing system, including interacting with NPCs. This quest leads the player around New Tristram, helping out Captain Rumford and Leah.
And killing some Zombies, too.
- This quest is initiated by walking towards New Tristram (as it is the only direction a player can travel) and speaking with Captain Rumford, who will have a yellow quest exclamation point over his head.
Helping the Guards
- Objective: Help the guards repel the dead
The player need only engage a small handful of zombies, and then wait for a few more to spawn once the original wave is dead. The player will be (slightly) aided by the captain and the Tristram guard. Once the task is complete, the player will speak to the captain, explaining that they are looking for the fire from the sky, the fallen star. Rumford will say:
- I've never seen anyone fight like that before! Guards, open the gates! You'll find Leah at the Slaughtered Calf Inn.
The quest log will automatically update.
Slaughtered Calf Inn: Speak to Leah
- Objective: Travel to the Slaughtered Calf Inn and speak with Leah
There is, again, only one direction to go in this early in the game. As well, on the minimap, the player will notice the quest is highlighted with a specific icon, making the Inn very hard to miss.
The player must enter the inn and speak with Leah, where the player character expresses gratitude that she is amongst the living. She responds:
- I did [survive]. But it blasted my uncle, Deckard Cain, into the depths of the old Cathedral. I tried to search for him, but the dead were already rising.
- I came back here to rally the militia, but--
And when her dialog is complete, the patrons of the inn will begin to twist and writhe, morphing into zombies and attacking the player character. There are very few to dispatch and do not pose any particular threat. Leah voices concern:
- The dead will overwhelm us all unless something is done.
The player will then earn their first quest reward.
- Note: Bron the Barkeep, the NPC behind the counter in the inn, is one of the first vendors a player will encounter. While it's unlikely a new player will have a burning need to sell their junk items, it is available if wanted.
Return to Rumford
- Objective: Talk to Captain Rumford
The player must then return south down the path back to Captain Rumford, right past the indefatigable Mr. Meat Wagon.
While the player has proven a much more adept undead slayer than the good captain, Rumford is still not impressed, telling the player:
- I admire your courage, but Captain Daltyn and the militia were slaughtered by those things. Only I survived.
The quest log will then automatically update to say "Slay a Wretched Mother", who just so happens to have burst through the barricade that was previously stopping the player from advancing outside of tristram.
The Wretched Mother is capable of spawning more zombies from her puddle of continuous vomit, but neither the mother nor her children are very dangerous. Killing her will net the player a bestiary entry, and an update to the quest.
Queen of the Brood
- Objective: Slay the Wretched Queen in the Old Ruins
The game, at this point, begins to open up a bit more, although still linear.
Players who have experience in Diablo II will notice that the areas outside of New Tristram are clearly marked with trails, so they can always tell where to go next. The amount of exploration a player executes is solely their discretion, but there are a few possible random areas, including a cave under a well, numerous cellars, and more.
However, the objective is simply to slay the Wretched Queen, which requires the player leaving New Tristram and traversing the Old Tristram Road. Wretched Mothers, for the bonus objective, can be found along the way to the Old Ruins if the player moves slightly off the path. Inside the ruins are some zombies and the first Waypoint of the game (unlike in Diablo II, the waypoint does not have to be clicked on to be activated, but rather walked over or near). In this instance, however, the Wretched Queen must be dispatched before the waypoint activates. She is conveniently placed a few yards away from the waypoint.
Much like the Wretched Mothers, she is able to vomit up zombies, the difference being that she has more hitpoints and is able to summon the zombies a bit faster than the mothers can.
Once she's dead, the quest will be updated to return to New Tristram via the newly-activated waypoint to speak to Captain Rumford.
Back to Town
Rumford is very close to the waypoint in New Tristram, and the player can hand in the previous quest steps. Rumford quickly dismisses the hard, dangerous work of the hero before delving into asking for another favor:
- Thank you for your help. But could you talk some sense into Leah? She won't give up on the idea of rescuing her uncle.
The last bit of dialogue signifies the end of the quest, and the player is granted a reward of gold and experience points. The player must speak with Leah to proceed onwards.
