When the smaller ones are gone, only a few dangerous Lamprey remain.
Lamprey are squirming eels that emerge in a flood from a ruptured Grotesque. They are not powerful monsters, but are disgusting in their fecundity and must be stomped out, like giant maggots. The eels, properly called Lamprey are wriggling creatures that must be killed lest they consume your character's toes, but they seem to die very quickly, and on the whole the Grotesque/Lamprey combo looks more inventive and amusing than dangerous. In fact, the amount of Lamprey that explodes from a dead Grotesque seems to be way too many to fit inside the body. Still, that's the nature of magic.

The animation of Lamprey explosion is very much overemphasized, and out of the huge pile of maggots, only a handful are actually capable of chopping off any player toes. The few slightly larger eels will attack, but dies easily and one AoE attack usually kills them all.

Spells and Abilities

There are no known spells or abilities by the Lamprey.

Related Monsters

The Grotesque spawns Lamprey upon death.

Background

The Lampreys share background with the Grotesque, but it's hard to know if they have been turned towards demonic powers, or if they are simply just animals put inside the constructed body. No proper background story has been given.

Diablo I Monster

There are no Lamprey-like monsters in Diablo I.

Diablo II Monster

Diablo 2 Pain Worms are like Lampreys, in that they are weak, worm-like creatures created from dead monsters. However, unlike Lampreys, Pain Worms can only be created by the death of a monster which has been cursed by another monster, the Putrid Defiler.

Development

Lamprey were first seen in the WWI 2008 gameplay movie, and have not changed much since.

Trivia

  • Lampreys in our world are blood-sucking eel-like creatures, that are hard to classify due to their unique morphology and physiology.
