}}[[Image:Mon-lamprey1.jpg|thumb|left|250px|[[Lamprey]] explosion!]]One of the more interesting monsters seen in the [[WWI 2008]] [[gameplay movie]], the Grotesque are basically living piñatas. They are fat, white, humanoid monsters, who has a very simple attack. What they do instead is run up to a player who comes into range, hits them, receives quite a few hits, bend over backwards and rupture into a massive fountain of wriggling silver eels. There seem to be far more eels within a grotesque than their volume would permit, but such is the nature of [[magic]].

The eels, properly called [[Lamprey]] are wriggling creatures that must be killed lest they consume your character's toes, but they seem to die very quickly, and on the whole the Grotesque/Lamprey combo looks more inventive and amusing than dangerous. One [[AoE]] attack usually kills them all.

Nothing is yet known about the source of the [[undead]] Grotesque. It looks like a construct of human body parts, who either just have [[Lamprey]] inside the tissue, or is designed with Lamprey in mind. Like a Lamprey container.

Lore

The grotesques may seem slow and senseless, but they hide many dangers within their hideously malformed bodies. A set of spikes lurks beneath the monsters' flesh and foul parasites nest within them. It is said that these horrors themselves are constructed by a greater evil... a darkness that I cannot even fathom. -- Deckard Cain

Diablo I Monster

The Grotesque did not feature in Diablo I.

Diablo II Monster

The Grotesque did not feature in Diablo II.

Development

The Grotesque was first seen in the WWI 2008 gameplay video, and when found in the Forgotten Tombs, he had significantly less health than in later gameplay videos as well as the BlizzCon 2008 demo. This is not spectacular though, as it seems that video had all mob's health turned way down to show the strength of the Barbarian.

In an interview with Anthony Rivero[1], the designer of the Grotesque, he mentioned the "Corpulent" as the name for this monster. It could be the monster "family" name, or possibly just an alternative name.
