The Shadow of Death is a spectral undead monster added to the game in the Reaper of Souls expansion pack. It is classified as a Reaper and can only be found in Act Five, as well as randomly in Nephalem Rifts. This monster is a sort of armored wraith, flying around and casting a slowing debuff, then attacking while its target is weakened. When Shadow of Deaths are summoned by Summoners of the Dead, they do not provide experience points when killed.

Blizzard introduced the monster with some lore as part of the Westmarch Bestiary preview in November 2013:[1]

“The shadow touched me, and darkness spread across my vision until all I could see was blackness. It gave way to a pale light that sapped my strength. It seemed so easy, but instead, I drew upon the last of my will and fought back. Color flooded back into my sight. The shadow was right before me, and I drove my spear through it.”
