The Forgotten Tombs was the first "dungeon-like" environments that Blizzard shown for Diablo 3. They are presumed to be located in the Leoric Highlands, or border to them, and you enter into the dungeons from New Tristram.
Relation to Diablo I
These dungeons are said by the D3 Team to be a re-interpretation of the old dungeons underneath Tristram. The Forgotten Tombs are part of the labyrinth of the first game, only with updated graphics for the new millennium, including new and old enemies.
