This item may be a reference to the ''Dragon Age'' franchise from BioWare, which featured blood mages who practiced a forbidden magic and were hunted for it. Or not, as "blood magic" is a common term for a type of magic fueled by blood (the caster's or a sacrificial victim's) and featured in many fantasy worlds.
