Materials are obtained by salvaging items with the Blacksmith or File:Leg-mat-adventurers-journal.jpg|thumb|350px|MysticAdventurer's Journal in townlegendary material. On their own materials ]]Materials have no functionon their own, but they are required for many crafting and item modification activities, including enchanting, craftingweapons, armor, and jewelry, and training Artisans items.
Materials can be found directly from monster or chest drops, and they are obtained by salvaging items with the Blacksmith.* All materials (and gems) in Reaper of Souls and Diablo 3 version 2 stack up to 1000. ==Materials in Loot 2.0== Diablo 3 version 2 reworked and simplified the Diablo 3 vanilla materials system. In the Loot 2.0 version of Diablo 3, materials are very simple, with one material obtained from salvaging each quality of item: white, blue, yellow, orange, plus another yellow material (Demonic Essence) that can only be found from Elites, Goblins, and Golden Chests. That same materials organization is found in Reaper of Souls, but is doubled by a higher tier of materials from level 61+ items and monsters. Reaper of Souls also introduces dozens of legendary materials, only a few of which are found in Diablo 3. These are required to craft the numerous set and legendary items found only in Reaper of Souls. ==Common Materials== Common materials are white, blue, or yellow, and may be dropped by monsters, chests, goblins, horadric stashes, etc. They are chiefly produced from salvaging items with the Blacksmith, with each color of item producing exclusively the same color of material. This is a change from D3v, where salvaging Rare yellow items produced both blue and yellow materials, and had a small % chance to produce a Fiery Brimstone as well. In contrast, now in D3v2 and RoS there is no variance in material type, and players who need more white or blue materials than they are finding from direct drops must pick up those types of items and bring them back to salvage with the blacksmith. * All level 61-70 items are Reaper of Souls only and not found in Diablo 3. White Materials
Salvage from gray and white items. 2-6 per salvage.* Common Debris -- Level 1-60.* Reusable Parts -- Level 61-70. Blue Materials
Salvage from blue items. 1-4 materials per item salvaged. * Exquisite Essence -- Salvage blue items level 1-60.* Arcane Dust -- Salvage blue items level 61-70. Yellow Materials
Salvage from Rare items. 1 per item salvaged.* Iridescent Tear* Veiled Crystal Drop-only yellows materials. Dropped by Treasure Goblins, random elites, Purple uniques, and resplendent chests.* Demonic Essence -- Level 1-60.* Death's Breath -- Level 61-70. ==Legendary Materials== Legendary materials are orange in color, like legendary items. They are rarer than common materials, and are essential for crafting and enchanting legendary/set items. * See the legendary materials article for full details. Salvaged Legendary Materials
The two basic types of legendary materials are created by salvaging legendary and set items. They may also be dropped directly by Rift Guardians in the same level range.* Fiery Brimstone -- Level 1-60.* Forgotten Soul -- Level 61-70. ===Dropped Legendary Materials=== Most legendary materials can only be found in the world, dropped by special types of purple Unique bosses. See the legendary materials article for full details about which crafting plans these materials are required for, and which and where are the enemies that can drop them. Drop rates increase with the difficulty level. Legendary Material typesdrop rates were tripled shortly after release in Patch 2.0.4. The drop rates are the same for Death's Breaths, which are much more common since they can drop from many more possible sources. * Normal: 15%* Hard: 18%* Expert: 21%* Master: 25%* Torment 1: 31%* Torment 2: 37%* Torment 3: 44%* Torment 4: 53%* Torment 5: 64%* Torment 6: 77% Only two of the Legendary Materials, the Adventure's Journal and Griswold's Scribblings, are found throughout the game, before level 70, and only those two are found in Diablo 3. The event has multiple stages and differs somewhat between Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls. All of the keys and demonic organs are technically "legendary materials," though that's a bit misleading since all the components involved in the Infernal Machine are used only for it, and thus don't really mix with the rest of the legendary mats.*See the Infernal Machine article for full details. =ARCHIVE: Diablo 3 vanilla MaterialsArchived info from the system in the game during Diablo 3 vanilla. The initial materials system ran from from launch in May 2012 until [[Diablo 3 version 2] went live in February 2014, with several minor additions and modifications during that time. The info below is no longer current and many of the materials no longer exist; all the obsolete types of material were transformed into the new materials when D3v2 went live.
There are nine materials in total. Each difficulty level has its own magic material and its own rare material. Inferno alone has a legendary material. An item always yields materials of the difficulty level its item level corresponds to: item levels 1–30 are Normal, 31–50 are Nightmare, 51–59 are Hell, and 60–63 are Inferno.

All materials can in D3v could stack up to 100, apart from Tomes which can go up to 1,000.
