The art controversy of Diablo III started with WWI 2008, when a number of Diablo fans found the colour of the Diablo environment palette to be "too colourful" (with the game actually being visible) . The actual art direction was done in the summer 2007.
Fan Reactions
The Summary
If the colour/fact that things are visible bothers you that much:

a)Just Darken the screen in the options (whether the monitors or Diablo III's)

b)Or better yet, turn the screen off!

The world of Sanctuary has had around 20 years to recover since the events of Lord of Destruction,It's not the fairy-and-unicorn-playground you make it out to be and not EVERYONE enjoys/wants to play a game with less colour than a 1920's film.
