The existence of a Diablo 3 Expansion pack was not a surprise, since the developers have never made any a secret of their desire to create at least one (and probably two) expansion packs for Diablo 3.[http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/diablo-3-will-have-several-expansions/]And fans were calling the [[D3V]] (vanilla) or [[D3C]] (classic), though Blizzard never reveals concrete details about their upcoming titles until they're ready to rollwith the expansions designated as [[D3X]] and [[D3Y]], long before Reaper of Souls was revealed.
Since long before Diablo 3's release fans were referring to Though no firm date has yet been given, the original game as [[D3V]] (vanilla) or [[D3C]] (classic)Blizzard Reaper of Souls page states "coming in 2014, with the expansions designated as [[D3X]] " and in an interview from Gamescom, Game Director Josh Mosqueira confirmed that Blizzard was targeting late 2013[[D3Y]http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/josh-mosqueira-reaper-souls-beta-test-may-start-year]for the start of the beta test.
There's much speculation about when D3X might be released, but clearly the pre-release target of 18 months after D3V is out of the question. In recent years Blizzard has required 20-28 months between expansions for [[WoW]] and [[Starcraft 2]], and has generally revealed these games 12+ months before they were released. Blizzcon 2013 comes 18 months after Diablo 3's release, which makes summer 2014 seem the earliest feasible target date, with many fans expecting D3X in late 2014 at the soonest.
