Emeralds are one of the four types of gems found in Diablo III.
Over the first year months of Diablo 3III, Emeralds held the Emerald has proven the most value (in Softcore) due to the huge damage boost they add popular gem to weapons. This is only true during the end gameupgrade, when characters have a high value in Critical hit Chance. At lower levels Rubies are much better weapon sockets, and they become end game viable when Patch 1.0.7 greatly buffed their damage. Emeralds are also coveted by since Demon Hunters and Monks for benefit from the +Dexterity boost when socketed in armor.  Emeralds are little-used in helms , and since all classes prefer the +Gold FindCritical Hit is not a much-sought after stat. It's been suggested that damage as the helm best bonus should be doubled or tripled, to make it more desirable to playersin high level weapons.
Emerald Changes
During the Beta test, Emeralds boosted Magic Find in helms. This bonus was switched back to Topaz (as it was in Diablo 2) before Diablo 3's release and Emeralds became the helm Gold Find gem.
