Orbs are Wizard-specific items found in Diablo III. Orbs are equipped in the off hand, like shields, but they do not have defensive bonuses and can not be used to block with. They look like come in a variety of graphics (usually crystal balls, but also books, as seen in the beta), and function as are simply items with bonus stats , usually to offense and spell-casting abilitiesor general bonuses. Using an orb is essentially a way for a Wizard to dual-wield Caster Weapons, at the cost of whatever defensive bonuses she might have obtained from using a shield.
Little As blocking is yet known about orb stats or properties. In theory, much less useful a defensive property in Diablo III than it seems like every Wizard would want to use onewas in Diablo II, since a wand or dagger + and using an orb would surely grant more in the off hand, purely for the offensive bonuses than just a single weapon, is not such as a two-handed damaging trade off, since the shield wouldn't have done all that much good anyway. Orbs are akin to the Necromancer's stafftotem. There must be some penalties to that equipment choice thoughs, to balance things outand add similar bonus properties.
