Disintegrate

Skill Design
Disintegrate fires a red, ruler-straight laser beam of arcane damage, striking everything in a line AoE right to the edge of the screen. The beam remains active as long as the mouse button is depressed (mana permitting), and can be moved around in all directions, emanating out from the stationary Wizard like spikes from a hub.
Disintegrate isn't that damaging and has more than about half a fairly high mana costsecond. The power of it comes beam turns from the speed; it moves at the speed of light, and unlike the other projectiles in Diablo III, instantly hits anything it's aimed at. This spell is at its best raking through red to purple to give a line visual indication of ranged attackers, especially when aimed at enemies on this; see the very edge of the screen. The Disintegrate laser will hit them instantly, while their arrows (or other attacks) must travel across the screen before they become damaging. It's quite possible to cook targets for a second, kill them, and then move before their projectiles reach yoututorial screenshots below.
This might be On the best use whole, Disintegrate seems like more of this a support skill late game; even if than a main weapon. The Arcane Power drain is fairly fast, and the damage doesnisn't scale up to keep it very high. Its utility comes from hitting multiple monsters in a killerline, and the speed of it could hit anything on ; Disintegrate is the only known skill that can instantly reach all the way to the edge of the visible screen. Literally instantly; as soon as the mouse is clicked the skill reaches from the Wizard all the way to the edge of the screen, instantly "silencing" enemy mages and summoners. (Depending on how difficult which makes it is good to trigger hit fast moving monsters, or opponents in the critsArena with Arcane damage.
This spell drains mana and deals damage steadily, at 12 points per secondIt's very useful to take out low hit point enemies from a distance. The disintegrate laser will hit an unlimited number of monsters at onceMonsters like skeletal archers or other ranged attackers who spawn behind other melee enemies are great to cook with Disintegrate, dealing 80% of since the damage on the target behind the previous one. Basicallybeam can get to them instantly, it would deal 100% to before their arrows or projectiles have traveled across the first one, 80% screen to the second, then 64%, 51%, 41%, 33%, etc, so it's still at least partially useful even after five or six enemiesWizard.
In The damage decreases to 80% with each additional target it strikes, so if the demo build at 2008, this spell wasn't very useful against large enemies, but was devastating against smaller enemies, especially ranged attackers such as Skeletal Archersgoal is to kill the 3rd or 4th monster in a row it may take a while. The Disintegrate ray hits anything on Of course the screen ones closer are taking more or less instantaneouslydamage and will die fairly soon, so nothing is out of reach thus bringing the target closer to being the first impact and there's no delay between clicking dealing higher damage. The damage decrease goes like this, with the mouse and hitting damage 80% of the enemy base with each monster in a row. 100%, 80% to the second, then 80% of that to the spell3rd, which is 64%. This one will surely be nerfed somewhat before It continues to decrease to 51%, 41%, and 33% to the final game6th, since it was just should a Wizard find so useful many targets in the '08 builda row.

Double Damage Upon Target Lock
Disintegrate kicks into a higher level of damage once it's been locked onto the same target for more than about half a second. This is indicated by the red beam turning purple, and was most clearly seen in the Arena demo at Blizzcon 2010, since the damage being dealt popped up with visible numbers.

This locked on +damage function has been there since the initial skill design, but there wasn't a visual element added to it until sometime in 2010; it's not visible in the old, mid-2008 movie of Disintegrate posted on Blizzard's character page.

The +damage with a target lock on isn't listed in the official skill description, but it's something the team talked about when Disintegrate was profiled as one of the Wizard's signature skills at Blizzcon 2008.

::The next spell, Disintegrate, was described as the ultimate face melting skill, and introduces a new mechanic. When you use Disintegrate, you will begin to emit a jet of searing red heat for as long as you hold down the mouse button. By sweeping the mouse around, you'll change the direction of the beam. The longer the beam holds on a specific enemy, the more damage it will do to that enemy.

You can see a demonstration of this to the right, with three screenshots taken from the Blizzcon 2010 PvP demo gameplay movie. Click to see it at full size.
