Changes

Previously, runes and their sockets had been square-shaped.

Since A more recent image, from August 2010, is seen to the newer rune graphics show runes shaped left. Runes are now round, like marbles, with a and bear striking graphicglyph graphics. In light of this change, it's likely assumed that rune the sockets in skills are now roundas well.
