→Item Sockets: fine tuned the info from the GamesCom video
Not much is yet known about what can be put into sockets; gems of various types have been seen in the gameplay movies and in the 2008 demos, but their bonus properties are unknown. No jewels jewels have been seen, and runes in Diablo III are for socketing into skills, not items. There may be (and probably are) other things to put into item sockets, but no info has been released about them.
The caravanCaravan blacksmithBlacksmith, an Artisan can add sockets to shields, helms, bracers, belts and pants, but not weapons, rings, amulets or pauldrons. However, these later latter items may be accessible through the blacksmith's later upgrades. The upgrade is hugely expensive compared to crafting a new item, and may only can be done oncemultiple times. It does not increase their sell value but does seem to alter the appearance of the item.
