Legendary and other materials are found in Reaper of Souls (a few are also found also in Diablo 3 version 2), and required for all legendary and Reaper of set crafting. While all the regular materials are created by salvaging items, all legendary materials except for Fiery Brimstones and Forgotten Souls must be found in the world. This page s under construction They can be difficult to obtain; almost all legendary materials drop only from certain purple Unique bosses, and will soon be streamlined these are largely random in their location and reformattedfrequency.
Like normal types of Materials, Legendary Materials have no function on their own, and are used exclusively in the crafting of set and legendary items. Players generally find a legendary crafting plan, teach it to the Blacksmith, and then view the details of that armor or weapon before deciding if it's worth trying to find the legendary material required to make it. That's what this article is for, with info on every legendary crafting materials, the legendary/set plan they are tied to, and the name and location of the Unique bosses capable of dropping them.
White Materials
Salvage from gray and white items. 2-6 per salvage.* Common Debris -- Level 1-60.* Reusable Parts -- Level 61-70. ===Blue Materials=== Salvage from blue items. 1-4 materials per item salvaged. * Exquisite Essence -- Salvage blue items level 1-60.* Arcane Dust -- Salvage blue items level 61-70. ===Yellow Materials=== Salvage from Rare items. 1 per item salvaged.* Iridescent Tear* Veiled Crystal Find only. Dropped by Treasure Goblins, random elites, Purple uniques, and resplendent chests.* Demonic Essence -- Level 1-60.* Death's Breath -- Level 61-70. ===Removed Materials=== Diablo 3 vanilla had blue, and yellow materials for each of the four difficulty levels, Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno. D3v2 simplified this system with the Normal blue and yellow materials remaining and covering level 1-60, and new blue and yellow materials added from 61-70. The old blue and yellow materials from Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno were all converted into the level 1-60 version of themselves, thus none of the following exist in the game any longer. Blue obsolete materials.* Shimmering Essence* Subtle Essence* Wishful Essence Yellow obsolete materials.* Fallen Tooth* Lizard Eye* Encrusted Hoof ===Legendary Materials: Salvageable=== There are two types of legendary material that are salvaged from legendary and set items, including crafted legendary/set items. One material comes from each salvaged item. They may also directly drop from Rift Guardians. * Fiery Brimstone -- Level 1-60.* Forgotten Soul -- Level 61-70. Each is used in all legendary crafting and enchanting recipes of their appropriate level range. Forgotten Souls are the chief bottleneck for all end game crafting and legendary enchanting, and most players feel it is impossible to have too many, since at any moment a ring or amulet might require a dozen or more enchants to get the perfect affix. ===Legendary Material Drop Rates===
Legendary materials drop more often on higher difficulty levels. Their drop rate was tripled in Patch 12.0.4shortly after Reaper of Souls' release, making them all much easier to find. Here are the V2.04 drop rates for legendary materials (and Death's Breaths.
* Normal: 15%
* Torment 5: 64%
* Torment 6: 77%
The same drop rates apply to Death's Breaths, though they have many more possible drop sources.
==Legendary Materials: Droppable== The following must all be found in the world. Only two, Adventure's Journal and Griswold's Scribblings, are found throughout the game, before level 70, and from objects of all types. All the rest drop only from Uniques (Purples) of the correct type, wherever they may be found, and only at level 70. Some Purples are bosses tied to quests and thus they appear every game in Adventure Mode, making them much easier to farm for their material. Examples include the Skeleton King, Maghda, Ghom, Cydaea, Rakanoth, Izual, Adria, etc. Many of those Uniques are the only source for one legendary material. Other random-spawning purples are much harder to find. The other types do not appear every game, seldom have a fixed location, and can require a lot of searching to find them even if they can only appear on one level. The best way to find these types of Purples is to find a game where they are a Bounty. There is no guarantee they will drop the legendary material even then, but at least you know where they are in that game.
The following 41 legendary materials are required for crafting various legendary and set items. The Adventure's Journal and Griswold's Scribblings can drop from various objects from level 10-70, and both are present in Diablo 3. All the rest are Reaper of Souls only, and only drop from level 70 Uniques (Purples) of the correct type.
This table is meant for quick reference. Refer to the individual legendary material articles for more details on the crafting purposes, scarcity, farming tips, and more.

| Pender's Purchase crafted legendary gloves.
| Breakable and clickable objects (except chests). Seen from loose floor tiles, urns and vases, barrels, dead bodies, etc.
| This is the most common legendary material, due to the huge variety of objects it may spawn from. The gloves are not very good, with no legendary property and just six random modifiers.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Angelic Shard
*Erelus, Act 5, Battlefields of Eternity. The Crag of Eternity, spawns with "The War That Time Forgot" event.
*Celik, Act 5, Pandemonium Fortress Level 2. Random.
| valign="top"| Hallowed Protectors is a popular set to create, with a variety of one-handed weapons and a shield. This is one of the more-common materials, with numerous Fallen Angels capable of dropping it. Izual is the most commonly farmed, simply because he appears every game.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Behistun Rune
* Shondar the Invoker, Act 2, Alcarnus. (Summoner, random spawn, sometimes a Bounty.)
* Pontius, Act 5, Westmarch Commons. (Random.)
| valign="top"| Another fairly common material, due to the sheer number of possible drop sources. This one can be farmed along with Maghda's Tortured Soul, since one of the Purples capable of dropping a Behistun Rune will appear perhaps 2/3 of the time in or on the way to Alcarnus.
|-

* Grimnight the Soulless, Act 4, The Silver Spire Level 2. {Random spawn, sometimes Bounty.)
| valign="top"| One of the tougher materials to obtain, since Purples of this type spawn very infrequently and are not often seen as Bounties. The weapon is not that great anyway, with no legendary affix, though it has high Life% inherent bonus.

* Aloysius the Ghastly, Act 3, The Keep Depths Level 2. (Random spawn.)
* Riplash, Act 3, Tower of the Damned Level 2. {Random spawn, sometimes Bounty.)

|-

| Cuddle Bears.
* Evil Oliver, Act 1, Whimsyshire. (Random spawn.)
| valign="top"| An especially hard material to find, as it requires a trip to Whimsyshire and Purple Cuddle Bears do not spawn there every game. This is necessarily farmed along with Mystical Source, which drops from Unique Ponies in Whimsyshire.
|-

* Headcleaver, Act 1, Leoric's Passage. Random spawn in Adventure Mode. Fixed spawn in Campaign Mode, during the Explore Cellar sub-quest of The Legacy of Cain quest.

|-

|
* Chiltara, Act 3, Caverns of Frost Level 2 dungeon below Fields of Slaughter. (Random spawn.)
| valign="top"| This material was almost unfindable during the first weeks of Reaper of Souls, due to a bug causing Chiltara to spawn very, very rarely.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Glowing Ore
* Magrethar, Act 5, Realm of the Banished area off of the Battlefields of Eternity. (Random spawn.)

| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Griswold's Scribblings
| Griswold's Perfection, one-handed Sword.
| Potentially every bookshelf, lore bag, Cain's backpack, satchels, podiums, Angiris Archives, etc, throughout the entire game. Anything clickable that might hold a lore book can drop this item once a character has previously found the lore book.
| valign="top"| The second most common legendary material, these can be found by any level character from hundreds of possible spots throughout the game. Though the sword has no special legendary property, it can roll with high damage and the common nature of the crafting material results in many players trying their luck on this one.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Hilt of the Silver Wolf
* Growlfang, Act 3, Arreat Crater Level 1. (Random spawn or possible Bounty target.)
* Gnawbone, Act 3, Tower of the Damned Level 1. (Random spawn.)
| valign="top"| Though fallen hounds are quite common monsters, they are usually seen in trash mob form with other Fallen. Finding a purple one is much less frequent.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Human Cartilage
* Cudglearm, Act 1, Cathedral Level 2. (Random spawn.)
* Tormented Behemoth, Act 1, Halls of Agony Level 2. {Spawns during the A Stranger in Need event at the very end of the level.}
| valign="top"| The shield has a bonus +10-20% chance to block and can be quite a powerful defensive bonus, for the rare character who uses a shield.
|-

* Ningish, Act 2, Sewers of Caldeum. (Random spawn.)

| valign="top"| (Random spawn or possible Bounty target.)
|-

| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Maghda's Tormented Soul
|
* Maghda. Fixed spawn, end dungeon from Alcarnus, Act 2.
| valign="top"| Cain's Destiny is one of the more popular item sets to craft with very nice 2 and 3 item bonuses, and Maghda is one of the easiest bosses to run for materials, so this is a popular combination.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Mystical Source
* Nightmarity, Act 1, Whimsyshire. (Random spawn.)
* Members of Team Unicorn: Miss Hell, R'Lyeh, Killaire and Maulin Sorely. (Random spawn.)
| valign="top"| This is necessarily farmed along with Eternal Power Capsule, which drops from Unique Cuddle Bears in Whimsyshire.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Phial of Weakness
* Handible, Act 3, The Battlefields. (Spawns during the Triage event in the Medical Camp. May be a Bounty.)
* Valifahr the Noxious, Act 3, Arreat Crater Level 1. (Rare spawn and sometimes Bounty.)
| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Quaking Vial
* Sledge, Act 4, Hell Rift. (Random spawn and sometimes a bounty.)

|-

|
* Malthael. Fixed spawn, Act Boss for Act 5.
| valign="top"| This Plan drops as a guaranteed on the first Malthael kill on each account. The material is random, and was extremely rare during the first two weeks of Reaper of Souls. The bug in drop rate was fixed in Patch 2.0.4.
|-

* Bashiok, Act 2, Dahlgur Oasis. (Random spawn.)
* Mundungo, Act 2, Dahlgur Oasis. Random spawn, always located in the large waterwheel section of the map, which spawns about every other game.
| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Shard of Entsteig Plate
* The Archivist, Act 2, Archives of Zoltun Kulle, The Unknown Depths. (Random spawn, sometimes a bounty.)
* The Tomekeeper, Act 2, Archives of Zoltun Kulle, Realm of Shadow. (Random spawn, sometimes a bounty.)
| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Shattered Core
* Rockgut, Act 2, The Unknown Depths dungeon below the Archives of Zoltun Kulle. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)
* Thrum, Act 2, Realm of Shadow, dungeon below the Archives of Zoltun Kulle. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)
| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Shimmering Quill
* Gorathra, Act 1, Musty Cellar below Old Tristram Road. (Random spawn.)
* Thornback, Act 3. The Keep Depths Level 1. {Random spawn.}
| valign="top"| Sarkoth and Gorathra are easy to search for, since there are three possible cellars along the Old Tristram Road, and all can be searched in just a moment or two. Most every game spawns two of the cellars, with one of the Quill Rat uniques appearing perhaps every 4th or 5th cellar.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Shuddering Demon Bone
* Kao'Ahn, Act 4, Gardens of Hope 2nd Tier. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)
* Oah'Tash, Act 4, Gardens of Hope 2nd Tier. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)
| valign="top"| Though these type of monsters are quite rare, one or the other spawns as a bounty at least every other game in Act Four, making them relatively easy to farm.
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Skelon's Dice
* Keeper Hashemel, Act 5, Infested Ruins area off of the Battlefields of Eternity. (Spawns during The Cursed Crystals event.
* Borgoth, Act 5, Realm of the Banished area via the Battlefields of Eternity. (Reached through the Portal from the Realm Beast.)
| valign="top"| For a time during the beta test, Malthael dropped this material, due to a bug.
|-

* Garganug, Act 3, Rakkis Crossing. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)

| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Sydyru Bone
* Sicklefang, Act 1, Fields of Misery. End boss of the Carrion Farm event.
* Hellscream, Act 2, The Unknown Depths dungeon below the Archives of Zoltun Kulle. (Random spawn.)
| valign="top"|
|-
| style="text-align:center;" |
Symbol of the Guardian Brotherhood
* The Crusher, Act 3, The Keep Depths Level 2. (Random spawn.)
* Busaw, Act 3, Rakkis Crossing. End boss of the Crazy Climber event.
| valign="top"| One of the most commonly-found legendary materials since there are so many common Uniques that can drop it. Dragus deserves special mention, as he is an almost free kill, spawning in the same place very near the Stonefort waypoint in perhaps 3/4 of the time in Adventure Mode.
|-

* Lorzak the Powerful, Act 1, Southern Highlands. (Random spawn or possible bounty.)

Infernal Machine
Infernal Machine: Reaper of Souls
* Key of Bones
* Key of Evil
* Key of Gluttony
* Key of War
* Leoric's Regret
* Vengeful Eye
* Vial of Putridness
* Writhing Spine
* Infernal Machine of Bones
* Infernal Machine of Evil
* Infernal Machine of Gluttony
* Infernal Machine of War
Legendary Materials: Salvageable
There are two types of legendary material that are salvaged from legendary and set items, including crafted legendary/set items. One material comes from each salvaged item. They may also directly drop from Rift Guardians, in the appropriate level range.
* Fiery Brimstone -- Level 1-60.
* Forgotten Soul -- Level 61-70.
Forgotten Souls are the chief bottleneck for all end game crafting and legendary enchanting, and most players feel it is impossible to have too many, since at any moment a ring or amulet might require a dozen or more enchants to get the perfect affix.
Infernal Machine: Diablo 3 Vanilla
* Devil's Fang
* Heart of Evil
* Idol of Terror
* Infernal Machine
Infernal Machine Legendary Materials
There are a number of legendary materials required to create the Infernal Machine and then to craft a Hellfire Ring in Reaper of Souls. The 4 types of keys drop only from the KeyWardens, and the 4 Demonic Organs drop only from the Ubers. See those articles for full details.
* Diablo 3 has just 3 keys, 1 Machine, and 3 Ubers for 3 Organs. That info is also covered in the Infernal Machine article.
* Angelic Wings -- D2:CE virtual item
Staff of Herding Legendary Materials
Whimsyshire is the rainbow-colored Easter Egg level in Diablo 3, which remains accessible in Reaper of Souls.
Staff of Herding* Four legendary materials, the Gibbering Gemstone* , Leoric's Shinbone* , Liquid Rainbow* , Wirt's Bell, are required to create the Staff of Herding, which is used to gain access to Whimsyshire. Going there is required in some cases, since two of the legendary materials can only be found from Uniques in Whimsyshire.
* See the Whimsyshire article for full details.
