The wretched mothers were once normal women, but in death they serve a dark purpose. Zombies return to Diablo III in much the same form as they limped around in Diablo I and Diablo II: humanoid, slow, shambling, and just generally unpleasant. Their slow speed and negligible intelligence makes them ideal targets for new characters who are just starting to practice their skills.
