[[Materials]] are required to make new items via the [[crafting]] system. They are obtained by [[salvaging]] magical, rare, set, and legendary items with the [[Blacksmith]]. Materials are required in all Blacksmith recipes.
There are three four types of materials keyed to each difficulty level, and the Normal, Nightmare, Hell and Hell materials can be upgraded to the next difficulty level -- for a priceInferno.
During much of Diablo III's development, salvaging was handled in the [[Nephalem Cube]] and there were four types of materials per difficulty; the "white" quality materials were removed, along with the ability to salvage normal or cracked item qualities, late in the Diablo III beta.
* See the [[materials]] and [[crafting]] and [[salvaging]] articles for full details.
