[[Diablo]] was in the end freed, and travelled in the guise of the [[Dark Wanderer]] to the desert of [[Aranoch]], releasing [[BallBaal]] with the help of [[Marius]], and carried on towards the jungles and Kurast, where Mephisto still was captured. As the youngest was freed from under Tristram, he consolidated the forces of [[Hell]] and punished [[Andariel]] and [[Duriel]] for their actions against them (despite it being part of their plans).
What has happened in the last 20 years since then is unknown. His [[Soulstone]] was destroyed upon the [[Hellforge]], limiting what he could do on Sanctuary. Whether or not he's truly dead is also hard to know, but true [[evil]] is very hard to destroy...
