This rune effect causes the spirit to be drawn towards the Witch Doctor after its initial victim has perished. The spirit will remain, swirling around the Witch Doctor for the remaining duration, when a target finds it's way near the Witch Doctor, the spirit will latch on to the new target without the Witch Doctor having to cast.
Casting Lingering Spirit while no enemies are on screen will cause the spirit to immediately be drawn around the Witch Doctor. For each Spirit summoned in this way, one monster who comes in the vicinity of close proximity to the Witch Doctor can be haunted for the remaining duration of a single Lingering Spirit. For instance, if there are no enemies on the screen and the Witch Doctor casts 3 Lingering Spirits, and shortly afterwards, 3 monsters close in on the Witch Doctor, each of the monsters will be haunted. A single monster cannot have more than one Lingering Spiritaffecting it at a time.
You may consider this spell a type of stackable, short duration damage armor in the vein of a Wizard's Ice or Storm armor spells.
