The Barbarian's skills were first revealed in October 2008, at Blizzcon. They were shown again, in much-expanded form at Blizzcon 2009. The biggest changes occurred at Blizzcon 2010, after all the passive skills had been moved to the Barbarian traits, this removing all passive skills, while freeing up space for more active skills.
* Skills -- General skill design and mechanics of passive and active skills.
* Barbarian skills -- The current state of the class. All are active skills.
* Barbarian traits -- Where Passive skills are housed in Diablo III.
Please note that the Fury development has changed how many skills work as well. It started out as Mana, but was changed to a Fury globe, much like a Warrior's "Rage" in World of WarCraft, and is currently then a set of three Fury Orbs, which fills up during combat before changing back to a larger, numerical pool. The costs and is used for the more spectacular skills. Many cooldowns of many Barbarian skills have no cost beside the cooldownchanged many times during development.
See the skill article for further details on how the tier systems evolved, and the skill system in general.
Blizzcon 2010 Skills to Traits
The biggest change to the skills came in Blizzcon 2010, when the new non-tree skill tree was debuted, with all of the passive skills modified into various traits. The following skills were removed entirely between 2009 and 2010.
Here's how the Barbarian skill navigation looked prior to Blizzcon 2010. Many of the skills remain, though most are modified in various ways.
