Diablo 3 is showing alot if similarity towards the blizzard game world of warcraft, so im just taking a guess the purple items are either just another magic item or like in WoW might be an epic item,as for the pots they are just like in WoW some give buffs and some might not not sure yet

Little is yet known about the items in Diablo III. There will be uniques and sets and many other items of the types we're familiar with from Diablo II, but this far before release the D3 team is keeping quiet about item types, and what we see in screenshots and gameplay movies is subject to change.
