Torment 1 difficulty slider from RoS beta.

Torment refers to the highest six levels of difficulty in Diablo 3 (as of D3v2) and Reaper of Souls. There are six levels of Torment, officially designated with Roman Numerals, but often expressed by fans as Torment 1 - Torment 6 or abbreviated to T1-T6. The higher levels of Torment do not unlock any additional content; they just increase the difficulty and rewards that first become available on Torment 1. (This changed slightly in Patch 2.0.5 when some extra rewards were added for T2-T6 play.)[1]

The Torment difficulties mark the real end game goal for most players. Only on Torment can the best items (Torment-only) be found, only on Torment can ingredients of the Infernal Machine drop, and the general difficulty and rewards accelerate to a pace that experienced players desire. It is a challenge to gear up to survive on Torment, especially for Hardcore players, but most players consider the struggle worth it.

Torment Required

Torment 1 and higher enables the following. See the Torment-only article for a much more detailed list of the following.

  • Class Item Sets can only drop on Torment 1 and higher, at level 60 and higher.
  • New level 70 legendary and set items in Reaper of Souls only drop on Torment 1 and higher.
  • Legendary item drop rates get a special boost in Nephalem Rifts on Torment 1 and higher.
  • The Infernal Machine only exists on Torment 1 and higher. The keys and organs do not drop below Torment, and the Hermit's Shack can not be entered below Torment.
  • Imperial gems may drop instead of Marquise gems on Master and higher.
  • There are considerable boosts to legendary drop rate in Torment 1 and higher. (See difficulty details.)

Legendary Drop Rate Bonuses

Legendary items have a base drop rate which varies greatly between different types of enemies, objects, and clickables. All of those drop rates are boosted by higher difficulty levels, with a special bonus kicking in once players reach Torment 1. There are also numerous set and legendary items that can only drop on Torment 1 and higher, at level 70.

  • Normal: 0% Legendary drop bonus, 25% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Hard: 0% Legendary drop bonus, 25% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Expert: 0% Legendary drop bonus, 25% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Master: 0% Legendary drop bonus, 25% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 1: +15% Legendary drop bonus, +44% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 2: +32% Legendary drop bonus, +65% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 3: +52% Legendary drop bonus, +90% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 4: +75% Legendary drop bonus, +119% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 5: +101% Legendary drop bonus, +151% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.
  • Torment 6: +131% Legendary drop bonus, +189% bonus in Nephalem Rifts.

Infernal Machine Drop Rates

Running the Infernal Machine to obtain a Hellfire Ring is more complicated in the new system. There are now four keys, rather than just three, and four portals with four Demonic Organs required to create a Hellfire Ring. One benefit is that players can now specify which portal they create, so if just one Organ is needed, a player can go after just that one, instead of simply opening a random portal and hoping to get the one they want.

  • Torment I: 25%
  • Torment II: 28%
  • Torment III: 33%
  • Torment IV: 38%
  • Torment V: 43%
  • Torment VI: 50%

The new system has stingier drop rates for Keys from Key Wardens and and Demonic Organs from Ubers. These do not drop at all until at least Torment 1, and max out with a much lower drop rate than the 100% possible in MP10 in Diablo 3 vanilla. The best strategy is for players to farm keys and organs in parties; each Keywarden and Uber has a drop check for each player, and everyone in the game can use the same portal to the Ubers, thus 4 players each with 4 keys could do all 4 portals in the same game.

Crafting and Materials

Legendary Materials and Death's Breaths get a drop rate bonus in higher difficulty levels. These figures were correct for Reaper of Souls v2.0.3. In Patch 2.0.4 legendary material drop rates were boosted to match exactly the drop rates of Death's Breaths.

The following figures are simply for archival interest.

  • Normal: 15% chance of Death's Breaths, 5% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Hard: 18% chance of Death's Breaths, 6% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Expert: 21% chance of Death's Breaths, 7.2% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Master: 25% chance of Death's Breaths, 8.6% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 1: 31% chance of Death's Breaths, 10.4% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 2: 37% chance of Death's Breaths, 12.4% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 3: 44% chance of Death's Breaths, 14.9% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 4: 53% chance of Death's Breaths, 17.9% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 5: 64% chance of Death's Breaths, 21.5% chance of Legendary Materials.
  • Torment 6: 77% chance of Death's Breaths, 25.8% chance of Legendary Materials.
