Tomes can be found around the Diablo games and generally tells some tale of the background story of the game. They generally have a gameplay purpose such as activating a quest or fulfilling some sort of quest objective as well as bringing the lore to life.

Diablo III

In Diablo III, tomes will be available just like in previous games, and probably an a lot more common sight than in Diablo II. The main difference here is that the tome will be saved with the character, and you can listen to the contents of it while playing. You will not have to stop and wait for a block of text to pass by.

Diablo II

Besides lore Tomes, Diablo II also has Tomes for scrolls of Town Portal and Identify spells.

Tomes for lore and story are generally more rare in the game than in Diablo I. They are also primarily found in the wilderness:

Diablo I

To date, Diablo I has seen the most books added by far. These can be found in the labyrinth underneath Tristram Cathedral:

Trivia

The same voice actor who did the Diablo I Tomes returns for the Moldy Tome and Horazon's Journal in Diablo II.
