Randomization is used for most Diablo game maps to make them change every time you play them. This is one of the main features of Diablo, and permeates almost all levels of gameplay. Maps, items, monsters (at least placement, type and amount) as random elements in the game.


Background

One of the main reasons Diablo I got so popular in the first place was due to the fact the random elements in the game compelled the player to continue playing, rather than just finishing the game and move on to another.

All games so far have had elements of static gameplay as well, such as unique items as well as parts of the maps always having the same layout (or in some cases, very similar). The Diablo II Chaos Sanctuary is a prime example of this.

Diablo III

Diablo III will have more static ementents than Diablo I and Diablo II, in that above-ground areas will all be static, to giv a deeper feeling of immersion in the game world.

The static over-ground areas will still have many randomized features, however, like quests only appearing in some games, or special monster camps that only appears under certain conditions.
