Background

Adria' is the Witch merchant from Diablo 1. She sold and bought potions, scrolls and staves. She also recharged staves with their magical charges. She was not in Diablo 2, having fled Tristram in anticipation of the attack on the village.

Adria the Witch returns from Diablo 1

Adria is the mother of Leah, who was adopted by Deckard Cain after Adria's supposed death.

As for what Adria had been doing since the events of Diablo I and her apparent death, beyond her fleeing of Tristram to the desert jewel of Caldeum, are currently unknown.

Diablo 3

In Diablo 3 the Hero finds out that Leah is Adria's estranged daughter, whose father is later found out to be Aidan. The Hero along with Leah rescue Adria in act 2 - after which she helps the Hero throughout specific portions of the act as well as teaching Leah to control her "power". Adria helps both Leah and the hero trap Belial's and Azmodan's soul in the Black Soulstone. When the hero returns from slaying Azmodan in act 3 Adria unleashes the power of the blackstone upon Leah revealing that as Aidan was possesed by Diablo when Leah was conceived- Leah is not only Aidan's daughter but also Diablo's. This is revealed to all be part of Diablo's plan. Leah was to simply act as a form for Diablo's soul to inhabit. Adria then disappears through a portal on Diablo's instruction not to be seen again in the standalone version of Diablo 3.
