During much of Diablo III's development, salvaging was handled in the Nephalem Cube and there were four types of materials per difficulty; the "white" qualitymaterials were removed, along with the ability to salvage normal or cracked item qualities, late in the Diablo III beta. The Nephalem Cube was also removed during the the beta and the task of salvaging items for materials was transferred to the Blacksmith.
