Materials are required to make new items via the crafting system. They are obtained by salvaging magical, rare, set, and legendary items with the Blacksmith. Materials are required in all Blacksmith recipes.

There are three types of materials keyed to each difficulty level, and the Normal, Nightmare, and Hell materials can be upgraded to the next difficulty level -- for a price.

During much of Diablo III's development, salvaging was handled in the Nephalem Cube and there were four types of materials per difficulty; the "white" quality materials were removed, along with the ability to salvage normal or cracked item qualities, late in the Diablo III beta.
