Followers are Diablo III's answer to the Mercenaries of Diablo II. There are three followers, the Scoundrel, Enchantress, and Templar, each of whom has their own personality and back story. Followers join your hero only when he or she is playing solo, and they are only strong enough to be of use in Normal difficulty.
In addition to the Followers, players will regularly encounter "Hirelings," wandering NPCs that join up for a short time, usually just a single quest.
