Tristram Cathedral is older than Tristram itself, with a long Horadric heritage, and a terrifying history.

Diablo III
The dungeons of Tristram will once again be playable. These are the catacombs and ruins of Tristram, once again inhabited by Cultists and other evil creatures.
As Seen at Blizzcon 2008
The town of Tristram was the starting area for the Blizzcon 2008 demo, the first public playable build of Diablo 3. The town of Tristram accessible in that demo was entirely in ruins. There were numerous broken and ruined small structures, all overrun by demons and monsters.
After working their way through the town, players reached the Tristram Cathedral. A small cemetery was set to the right of the Cathedral, and once entered dozens of zombies burrowed up from the earth.
The Cathedral could be entered, but not explored. Despite the numerous pieces of concept art showing off the Cathedral's interior, none of that was visible in the play demo. Players could do nothing within the structure but walk over to a large glowing hole in the floor, the one created by the meteor strike, and click on it. That was a loading point, and players next found themselves down in the actual dungeons.
There's no telling if the town will be anything like this in the final game, or if that was just a truncated version put together for the show demo.
