Lam Esen was a scholar who was the author of the Black Book. He is believed to have studied Skatsimi magic as well as the effect of the Prime Evils on the realm of Sanctuary. Finding the book is a quest in Diablo II.
Considering his interest in Skatsimi magic, he could very well have been a member of the Taan mage clan.
