Leoric the Skeleton King returns in Diablo III. His undead bones have been reanimated, and once again he's raised an army of the undead and awaits any hero who might dare bring the warmth of life into his tomb, in the catacombs beneath Tristram. Leoric is one of the first quest bosses a new character encounters, and defeating him brought an end to the Blizzcon demo, the first playable version of Diablo III ever seen by the public. See The Skeleton King page for more details about the quest.

Leoric is found on a throne at the end of a scripted level. The player must fight through several blockades and traps to reach Leoric's room. Along the way, Leoric's ghostly form is encountered, during which he taunts you before blowing back through the floor and vanishing, just as a great number of undead emerge from all sides of a large room.

Once you do reach Leoric's throne, a bridge crumbles behind you leaving no escape; you must defeat Leoric to survive. Leoric's giant bones are found on a throne, and they remain motionless until a player produces The Crown of the Skeleton King, a quest item found in the dungeon above. The crown restores Leoric to life, and he rises up, taunting the player wielding a massive two-handed maul. As soon as Leoric is activated squads of all types of skeletons come from the sides of the screen, and more are found throughout Leoric's throne room, if the player retreats from the dais on which Leoric's throne sits.

Leoric deals substantial damage with his massive club, but only swings once every few seconds, giving a player plenty of time to score hits on him between swings. It's a good idea to try to stay just out of range so you can dodge the attack, since it deals considerable damage.

Leoric also retains his ability to summon skeletons, and will do so during the fight, if given the opportunity. Most players at BlizzCon would fight Leoric for a moment, then run off and kill some of the skeletons he summoned to get a health globe or two, then return to the battle with Leoric.

Leoric dropped 4-6 rare items when killed in the Blizzcon build, but the game was much too far from completion then to use that as a prediction of how valuable he'll be in the final game.

The tragic tale of King Leoric's fall is told in The Return of Terror, a book by the Horadrim, and through the quests and Tomes of lore found in the dungeons in the game.

Leoric was an Eastern Lord, who came down to Khanduras, which was without a king, with knights and priests of the Zakarum and took the role upon himself. Despite some rumblings, he became known and loved by the people in the short time he ruled. He was a just and wise king.

He established his castle in the town of Tristram, near the ancient and decayed Horadric Monastery. Deep within the monastery laid the soulstone containing Diablo's essence, and though trapped within the stone, Diablo was strong enough to send forth his spirit. The Lord of Terror invaded Leoric's dreams, attempting to corrupt and possess the King. Leoric was able to resist Diablo's presence, but he was driven mad by the ordeal.

Diablo had already drawn in Archbishop Lazarus, Leoric's most trusted adviser, and with Lazarus whispering into his ear, the mad king turned on his own people, executing those who disobeyed him, ordering his army into a suicidal war against the friendly neighbouring kingdom of Westmarch, and finally purging most of the townspeople from Tristram when his son, Prince Albrecht, vanished. The horrible truth was that it was Lazarus himself who kidnapped the boy.

Leoric's most loyal knight, Sir Lachdanan, finally led a revolt against the deranged tyrant, and after a pitched battle the King was cornered. His knights demanded explanations, but Leoric spit defiance to the end. Ultimately, Lachdanan was forced to commit regicide, plunging his sword through the King's heart. Bitter to the end, the dying Leoric called down a curse on his former servants, the power of which ultimately consumed them all.

Despite his madness, Leoric was given a royal burial, entombed beneath the Monastery in a special crypt. Diablo's growing power refused to let the king rest though, and the Lord of Terror was able to call Leoric back from the dead, granting his skeleton an unholy life and new powers. Leoric was unable to venture forth from his tomb, but he slay many adventurers who dared enter his lair, until he was finally dispatched by the hero who ultimately defeated Diablo, took the essence of the soulstone into his forehead, and became the Dark Wanderer.

Leoric lay broken and still for two decades after those events, but rumor in New Tristram is that the Black King stirs, as evil men seek some sacred objects in the catacombs below the Monastery, and hope to call Leoric's spirit back to his bones, to join them in serving their unknown dark lords.

Lore
The Zakarum High Priests in Kurast proclaimed Leoric King of Khanduras many years ago. He ruled well until Diablo's influence drove him mad and the loyal knight Lachdanan was forced to slay him. Afterward, Diablo himself raised Leoric from the dead as the Skeleton King until the monarch's son, Aidan, vanquished him.

Bul-Kathos, also known as the Immortal King, was a great and ancient Barbarian king who organised the barbarian tribes. He was also one of few Nephalem.

__TOC__
Background
Bul-Kathos is mostly known to have united the Barbarian tribes, and set the people upon the great "vigil" of protecting Mount Arreat, and the Worldstone within. While it's unknown if even the Barbarians knew that the Worldstone was inside, or what sort of power it had, Bul-Kathos is the most revered barbarian through time, and the barbarian people call themselves the Children of Bul-Kathos in his honour.

Men in the Western Kingdoms gave the tribes the epithet "Barbarians", as they only saw the grim outlook of the people, but at heart, they are a honourable people, with Bul-Kathos's deeds as guide.

Bul-Kathos knew the secrets of the ancients, the mysteries of what's below Mount Arreat and of the prophecies regarding the dark times ahead. He shared these secrets with a close friend (or possibly brother) called Fiacla-Géar ("Sharp-Tooth"). When the two started to devote themselves and their people to protecting the secrets, they disagreed on exactly how to do this.

They both agreed the other's philosophy had merit, so when Bul-Kathos united the tribes and training them in strict martial discipline to make sure the tribes faithfully would concentrate on their goal for generations to come, Fiacla-Géar gathered together a small group consisting of the tribes' greatest warrior-poets and shamans and mysteriously retreated into the forests surrounding the area known as Scosglen. The Druids were henceforth separated from the barbarians, fighting the same war in different ways.

The only currently known tome to have this information is the ancient tome of the Druids, Scéal Fada ("Long Story").

Bul-Kathos' Children
The item set Bul-Kathos'_Children Bul-Kathos' Children consist of two two-handed weapons. If this could have any relation to the Children of Bul-Kathos is unknown. One possibility is that his followers wanted to like themselves with his weapons.

Stjernerlever: Creating page on Nephalem Valor

Nephalem Valor is a new system introduced in Diablo III. It is intended among other systems to make sure that the end game is fun and exciting and also that the game is balanced so a 3-minute run of the same area won't be the most efficient way to acquire loot.

Nephalem Valor is one of the major new systems in Diablo III and it kicks in at level 60. It is still in testing and Blizzard is still working out the details. Here’s how it currently works internally: Rare and Champion packs already have great loot on them. By killing a Rare or Champion pack, not only do you get their loot, but you’ll also receive a buff granting you increased magic find and gold find. However, if you change a skill, skill rune, passive, or leave the game, the buff disappears. As an extra reward, if you kill a boss while this buff is active, you’ll receive extra loot drops from that boss.

The exact amount of magic find and gold find provided by the buff is still being reviewed, as is the amount of extra loot you get from a boss while the buff is active. Blizzard is also playing around with whether or not the buff stacks, what the duration should be, and whether or not it should persist through death. The buff should be strong enough to make staying in your current game more rewarding than creating a new game. At the same time, if the buff is too strong, it risks making shorter play sessions feel not worthwhile.

This system is expected to encourage players to stick with a skill build of their choice, select an area of the game they enjoy, and sweep it for rare and champion packs on their way to a boss, finishing off a run with a boss that’ll be worth killing. If you wanted a shorter play session you could be done at that point, but if you have more time, the path of least resistance would ideally be to stay in the same game and make your way towards the next boss.

Inarius was an Archangel of the High Heavens, once part of the Angiris Council, and one of the creators of Sanctuary.

The story has been retconned since the first manual was printed, and that will be added to this article.

The Sin War Background
Inarius together with other rogue angels and demons created Sanctuary and the Nephalem (angel and demon hybrids with great power). However the development of the Nephalem's powers infuriated Inarius, making him want to start anew by eradicating all the Nephalem. However this brought him into a conflict with Mephisto's daughter (and his romantic partner) Lilith. This conflict resulted in the banishment of Lilith and the creation of the Worldstone.<br><br>

Inarius used the worldstone to prevent the Nephalem from developing their powers, reducing each succeeding generation's power until they became normal humans of Sanctuary. Inarius also used the worldstone to hide the existence of Sanctuary from the High Heavens.<br><br>

He later created the religion Cathedral of Light to make the beings of Sanctuary worship and serve him. Inarius is also know as the Prophet of the Cathedral of Light. He's also a former member of the Angiris Council.
Inarius has a son with Lilith named Rathma whom is the predecessor of Necromancers and a follower of balance. Rathma works closley with Trang-Oul to keep the balance of Sanctuary.<br><br>

Inarius was punished by the Angiris council and was given as a gift to Mephisto for his wrongdoings.

Former Background
This was formerly the background for Inarius, found in the Diablo I Manual, under the Overlords section:

::Angel Inarius, was proud of his beauty and boasted loudly of his purity and worth. His thoughts became so clouded that he believed himself to be above both Angel and Demon, and he left the High Heavens to form his own dominion. He constructed a great cathedral of mirrored glass and crystal, and followers flocked to him, drawn by his numinous charm and wealth. Once Inarius had gathered a seizable army, he decided to prove his power.<br><br>

::Inarius first laid siege to an infernal temple devoted to the worship of Mephisto, but made the foolish mistake of overestimating his prowess. The armies of Inarius laid waste to the temple and killed the dark monks that dwelled within. The Three Evils had considered the vain warrior a mere nuisance and amusement until this time, but this was an insult that they could not bear.<br><br>

::Mephisto himself is said to have appeared at the cathedral of Inarius. He laid waste to the church and the surrounding countryside. The Lord of Hatred took the proud archangel and his followers captive. He bound Inarius with tremendous chains and slowly tore the wings from the back of the angel. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out the once glowing skin and his features were distorted by vile powers. Many of the followers of Inarius were given as gifts to Baal and Diablo, but the rest were molded to match the bloated image of the now crippled angel. To this day, Inarius is said to be trapped in Hell within a chamber of mirrors, his eyelids torn from his face as he is forced to gaze upon his misshapen form for all eternity. His misguided followers now serve as Hell's taskmasters, taking the anguish of their lost glory out upon the bodies of others.
The Aranoch desert sits on the east of the Tamoe Mountains, which lines the eastern border of the Western Kingdoms, acts as a natural barrier into these provinces. Although impassable in most areas, these mountains hold a vast and lush woodlands. These forests stand in stark contrast to the bleak wastelands lying beyond them to
the east: the flat, unforgiving, sand-swept deserts of Aranoch.

Boasting one of the harshest climates in the world, the deserts of Aranoch claim the lives of many each year. Only the most robust and highly trained nomads survive longer than a few hours in this scorching environment. This vast desert land is mainly comprised of vast, empty tracts, punctuated with but a few specially adapted plants and trees. Water is a rarity among the sand dunes of Aranoch, with dry spells reportedly lasting for years. The climate of this desert ranges from life threatening heat
during summer days, to dry frigid winds during winter nights. Set on the western edge of the Twin Seas, the jewel city of Lut Gholein has actually prospered in the merciless environment of Aranoch. Most credit this to the city’s coastal location and strong sea trading ties with the kingdoms to the east and west. Although a few bands of nomadic people have found ways to survive in this hostile desert, most steer clear of these sandy wastelands.

The perilous nature of Aranoch’s unique and deadly environment is without equal. Few creatures could survive in habitats so unforgiving, but some hardy beasts have managed. Now twisted by the chaos brought about by the arrival of the Prime Evils, these unique beasts are fearsomely powerful.

Kehjistan is a great empire in the East which include cities like Caldeum, Viz-jun, Ureh and Kurast.

Background
Kehjistan has a history that goes back several thousand years. On the eastern edge of the Twin Seas lie the emerald jungles of Kehjistan. Several thousand years ago, hunter-gatherers found themselves drawn to the lush, fertile rain forests and bountiful game inhabiting Kehjistan.

But there was something else; Kehjistan's geography was rife with nodes of magical energies, and eventually those with innate, arcane abilities began to sense and recognize these forces, gathering in groups to settle these special areas. It was here that the original mage clans, the Vizjerei, the Ennead and the Ammuit, were founded. Unfortunately the history of Kehjistan is not a peaceful one, and the Mage Clan Wars that erupted nearly destroyed the clans.

Sages would come from far and wide to study and collect the rare plants and animals that make their homes in the rain forests of Kehjistan up until the first demonic war, when the jungle became far too dangerous to visit, let alone inhabit. Entire villages, even small cities were wiped out.

The coeval capitol of Kehjistan, Kurast was now under siege by the powers of Hell, and was kept safe only through powerful magical barriers that just barely held the demons at bay.

Even through the short troubled times, the nation still managed to prosper. Emperor Hakan was the last regent to rule the country in prosperity. As he be came ill and his son Hakan II took over, incompetence ruled the land and much fell to ruins and slum. The intolerant Zakarum religion re-emerged, and quarrelled with the mage class.

Kehjistan Geography
Kehjistan encompasses almost one-third of Sanctuary's eastern hemisphere. With an average rainfall of over four hundred inches per year, Kehjistan has the largest rainforests in the known world. This huge expanse of jungle feeds the Argentek river, which is the longest, widest river in Sanctuary.

Hundreds of smaller rivers and tributaries twist and turn their way through the lush tropical forests until they finally unite with the mighty Argentek. Herbalists and alchemists revere the rainforest environment for its ecological diversity.

Known Names of Kehjistani Citizens
While Kehjistani seems to be speaking a language closely related to the real world Arabic, this isn't true for all names. Abd al-Hazir has a name with a direct meaning in Arabic, while many other only sound like it. This list is collected from various sources in the Diablo franchise, including Diablo II sorcerer mercenaries. From an in-world perspective, it's good to know that some of these names might just be their merc nicknames, not actual names:

Abd al-Hazir
- Ajheed
- Barani
- Raldin
- Rhadge
- Scorch
- Telash
- Thadar
- Valthek
- Vanji
- Yashied
- Yatiraj

Bul-Kathos, also known as the Immortal King was a great and ancient Barbarian king, who organised the tribes to the modern day people who call themselves the Children of Bul-Kathos.

Training is the process of upgrading the Artisans. Each Artisan has ten skill levels, and as they increase in skill they gain new titles, learn new crafting recipes, and offer better items for sale.

Their appearance improves as well, with their wagons growing more elaborately-decorated, and more cool stuff appearing in their displays.

Training an Artisan is not free; each level requires progressively more materials and gold. Since the higher levels provide considerable benefits to the player, it's assumed they will be quite expensive to train, though no details have yet been revealed.

The Blacksmith
Haedrig Eamon starts out as an Apprentice Blacksmith. To upgrade him to the next level, Journeyman Blacksmith, costs 250 gold as seen in the table below (or on Diablo 3's own website ). However the blacksmith also needs experience in each level. In the first level that costs 250 gold for each 20%. So upgrading a blacksmith to a fully learned apprentice blacksmith will cost a cumulative total of 1000 gold (the last 20% from 80 to 100 is leveling him to journeyman blacksmith). For each level the blacksmith increases, this price is increased 250 gold.
In the later levels (from grandmaster and up) the price also includes Pages of Blacksmithing.

* Level One: Apprentice Blacksmith. Starting state.
* Level Two: Journeyman Blacksmith.
** Upgrade Cost: 250 gold.
* Level Three: Adept Blacksmith.
* Level Ten: Exalted Blacksmith.
** Upgrade Cost: 5000 gold and 100 Pages of Blacksmithing.

The cumulative total of an exalted blacksmith will be 60,000 gold and 1090 Pages of Blacksmithing.

The Jeweler
Covetous Shen starts out as an Apprentice Jeweler. To upgrade him to the next level, Journeyman Jeweler, costs 1000 gold as seen in the table below.
The Mystic
The mystic was one of the three intended artisans but was later removed. He was intended to craft magical items for the spell casters but his items have been moved to the blacksmith who now also crafts these items.
Training is the process of upgrading the Artisans. Each Artisan has five skill levels, and as they increase in skill they gain new titles, learn new crafting recipes, and offer better items for sale.
Training is the process of upgrading the Artisans. Each Artisan has five skill levels, and as they increase in skill they gain new titles, learn new crafting recipes, and offer better items for sale.
Their appearance improves as well, with their wagons growing more elaborately-decorated, and more cool stuff appearing in their displays.
The mystic was one of the three intended artisans but was later removed. He was intended to craft magical items for the spell casters but his items have been moved to the blacksmith who now also creates these items.
The Jeweler
The jeweler is called Covetous Shen

Nothing is yet known of the Jeweler's starting level, or upgrade costs.

Training an Artisan is not free; each level requires progressively more materials and gold. Since the higher levels provide considerable benefits to the player, it's assumed they will be quite expensive to train, though no details have yet been revealed.
Haedrig Eamon starts out as an Apprentice Blacksmith. To upgrade him to the next level, Journeyman Blacksmith, was quite inexpensive, at least as seen in the Caravan video, in August 2010. Final game prices may vary.

* Level One: Apprentice Blacksmith. Starting state.
* Level Two: Journeyman Blacksmith.
** Upgrade Cost: 4 Common Scraps, 1 Subtle Essence, and 75 gold.
